CFD modelling of hydrogen and hydrogen-methane explosions-Analysis of varying concentration and reduced oxygen atmospheres

Summary: This study evaluates the predictive capabilities of the advanced consequence model FLACS-CFD for deflagrations involving hydrogen. Two modelling approaches were presented: the extensively validated model system originally developed for hydrocarbons and a Markstein number dependent model. The models' ability to predict overpressure and flame arrival time for scenarios with different hydrogen concentrations was assessed. The study found that FLACS-CFD 22.1 IH provided more accurate overpressure predictions than FLACS-CFD 22.1, especially for scenarios with varying hydrogen concentrations and/or added nitrogen or methane. However, further development of the model is needed for more accurate predictions involving rich hydrogen mixtures or scenarios with significant deviations from ambient conditions.

Hydrogen gas dispersion studies for hydrogen fuel cell vessels II: Fuel cell room releases and the influence of ventilation

Summary: This study investigates the effects of hydrogen leaks on the flammable region inside a fuel cell room using computational fluid dynamics modeling. The results show that the size of the flammable region is initially limited by self-induced entrainment and recirculation of air caused by the buoyant rising of hydrogen. Ventilation has an impact on the stability of the flammable region. By adjusting the ventilation rate and leak level, timely hydrogen evacuation and leak detection can be achieved.

Effect of longitudinal slope on the smoke propagation and ceiling temperature characterization in sloping tunnel fires under natural ventilation

Numerical simulations reveal that the thermal plume characteristics in sloping tunnels are different from those in horizontal tunnels. Simulating vented hydrogen deflagrations: Improved modelling in the CFD tool FLACS-hydrogen

Summary: This paper validates the computational fluid dynamics tool FLACS-Hydrogen in vented deflagration experiments conducted in 20-foot shipping containers, showing that peak pressures for stratified mixtures are higher than for homogeneous hydrogen mixtures. Using an improved numerical solver and physics models leads to significantly better predictions of peak pressures.

Influence of tunnel slope on movement characteristics of thermal smoke in a moving subway train fire

Summary: The influence of tunnel slopes on the temperature distribution of smoke when a subway train carrying fire passes through was investigated using computational fluid dynamics. The sliding grid technology was employed to simulate relative train-tunnel movement, and it was found that the tunnel slope affects the movement and temperature distribution of smoke after the train stops. Increased tunnel slope delays smoke counterflow and affects upstream temperature distribution.
