Stability and Strength of Monolayer Polymeric C60

Bo Peng

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, it is found that the stability of quasi-tetragonal two-dimensional fullerene networks is not as expected, while the quasi-hexagonal phase exhibits relatively high stability. The high stability of the quasi-hexagonal phase is attributed to the strong covalent C-C bonds that tightly hold the linked C60 clusters together, allowing for a closely packed hexagonal network.

A few-layer covalent network of fullerenes

Elena Meirzadeh et al.

Summary: This study introduces a two-dimensional crystalline polymer called graphullerene, which bridges the gap between molecular and extended carbon materials. It consists of hexagonally arranged C60 fullerene subunits that are covalently interconnected. The researchers have successfully synthesized large, charge-neutral, purely carbon-based crystals that can be mechanically exfoliated to produce molecularly thin flakes with clean interfaces. The thermal conductivity of graphullerene is found to be higher than that of molecular C60, thanks to its in-plane covalent bonding. Furthermore, the presence of moire-like superlattices is observed using transmission electron microscopy and near field nano-photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Photogenerated Defect-Transit Dual S-Scheme Charge Separation for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Production

Xue Luan et al.

Summary: This study proposes the rational design of a dual S-scheme heterojunction in lychee-shaped W18O49/CdWO4/CdS nanostructures to achieve high photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under visible light irradiation. The significant activity of W18O49/CdWO4/CdS in photocatalytic HER is attributed to its unique structure, effective charge separation by the photoinduced defect-transit dual S-scheme mechanism, and strong internal electric field. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements further confirm the dual S-scheme mechanism in the photoinduced carrier transfer pathways. This research provides a new strategy for designing dual S-scheme heterojunctions to improve photocatalytic performance through defect band structure engineering.

Summary: Efficient utilization of infrared light is achieved by the discovery of CuS@ZnS shell nanocrystals with strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics. These nanocrystals exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and possess high activity and stability under near-infrared light irradiation. The plasmon-induced defect-mediated carrier transfer (PIDCT) at the heterointerfaces of the nanocrystals provides a viable strategy for tuning LSPR-generated carrier kinetics and improving photocatalytic performance.

Summary: Photocatalytic water splitting is an environmentally friendly method to produce hydrogen and reduce global carbon emissions. Monolayer fullerene networks, synthesized recently, offer new material candidates for photocatalysis due to their large surface area, abundant active sites, and potential for hydrogen storage. The electronic structures of monolayer fullerene networks were investigated using density functional theory and hybrid functional calculations. It was found that these networks have suitable band gaps, appropriate band edges, and sufficient driving force for water splitting. Additionally, different phases of fullerene networks exhibit unique optical properties, making them advantageous in photocatalysis as either electron acceptors or donors.
