Infrared Photodetectors and Image Arrays Made with Organic Semiconductors

Zhi-Ming Zhong et al.

Summary: Through introducing larger heteroatom, regio-regular backbone, and extended branching position of the side-chain, we developed polymer semiconductors (PPCPD) with a narrow band-gap to construct the photosensing layer of thin-film photodiodes and image arrays. The resulting organic photodiodes exhibited a spectral response ranging from near ultraviolet to short-wavelength infrared, achieving a competitive performance with inorganic crystalline detectors in the 900-1200 nm range. The high photodetectivity and quantum efficiency of the amorphous/nanocrystalline thin-film photodiode enabled high pixel-density image arrays without pixel-level patterning in the sensing layer, allowing for high pixel-density short-wavelength infrared imaging at room temperature.

Low-cost organic photovoltaic materials with great application potentials enabled by developing isomerized non-fused ring acceptors

Yiming Shao et al.

Summary: Simple structured non-fused ring acceptors (NFRAs) and polymer donors are crucial for the application of organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their low cost and simple synthesis. In this study, two isomerized NFRAs, 4T-FClFCl and 4T-2F2Cl, were designed with end-group engineering to modulate the electrostatic potential distributions and crystallinity of acceptors, resulting in improved intermolecular interactions. The OSC based on 4T-2F2Cl achieved a record-high efficiency of 16.31% when blended with a low-cost polymer donor PTQ10, which was attributed to the improved bulk heterojunction morphology and reduced non-radiative recombination loss.

High-performance organic photodetectors enabled by a refined fibrillar multiphase morphology

Huilei Quan et al.

Summary: Sequential casting (SC) can improve the film morphology of donor:acceptor blend layers and enhance the performance of organic photodetectors (OPDs). In this study, a refined fibrillar multiphase morphology is achieved by SC in an NT812:IEICO-4F blend film, leading to improved charge generation and collection, reduced trap states, and enhanced charge block capability. As a result, the OPD exhibits high external quantum efficiency and low dark/noise current, achieving a maximum special detectivity of 5 x 10(13) Jones at 860 nm. Similar enhancements are observed in OPD devices based on other blend systems with similar fibrillar refinement, providing guidelines for film structure manipulation towards high OPD performance.

High-performance nonfused ring electron acceptor with a steric hindrance induced planar molecular backbone

Hao Lu et al.

Summary: Three nonfused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) were purposefully designed and synthesized, with TTC6, TT-C8T, and TT-TC8. The molecular geometry can be adjusted by the steric hindrance of lateral substituents, resulting in improved planarity and intramolecular charge transfer effect. TT-TC8, with its perpendicular phenyl substituents, exhibits good solubility and suppresses over-aggregation. It forms multidirectional regular molecular orientation and closer molecular stacking in the film, leading to the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.13% among NFREAs.
