Stretchable and biodegradable chitosan-polyurethane-cellulose nanofiber composites as anisotropic materials

Yu-Feng Shih et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were incorporated in chitosan-polyurethane composites to enhance their stretchability and anisotropy. Biodegradable polyurethane was synthesized and combined with CNFs to form the DP-CNF composite crosslinker (DPF). The DPF crosslinker was then blended with chitosan solution to prepare polyurethane-CNF-chitosan (DPFC) composites. The resulting anisotropic films showed great potential for biomimetic and tissue engineering applications.

IL-1 and IL-1ra are key regulators of the inflammatory response to RNA vaccines

Siri Tahtinen et al.

Summary: Lipid-formulated RNA vaccines can cause systemic inflammatory responses in humans, which were not predicted in preclinical studies. The IL-1 pathway plays a key role in triggering vaccine-induced inflammation, but this effect is dampened in mice.

Magnesium-Encapsulated Injectable Hydrogel and 3D-Engineered Polycaprolactone Conduit Facilitate Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

Zhi Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, an injectable hydrogel based on bisphosphonate was developed to sustainably release magnesium ions for peripheral nerve regeneration. The experimental results showed that magnesium ions promoted neurite outgrowth in a concentration-dependent manner by activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and Sema5b. In a rat nerve defect model, filling the polycaprolactone conduit with magnesium-releasing hydrogel significantly enhanced axon regeneration and remyelination, leading to improved functional recovery.

3D printed high-resolution scaffold with hydrogel microfibers for providing excellent biocompatibility

Wenjie Ye et al.

Summary: Melt electrowriting (MEW) can print high-resolution scaffolds with ultrafine fibers, but often suffer from low cell seeding efficiency due to large pore size. By electrospinning a GelMA hydrogel fibers membrane (HFM) on the MEW scaffold, a composite scaffold was created with controlled structures, porosity, and excellent cell seeding performance. The composite scaffold showed great biocompatibility with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVES) and supported cell migration to form a cell sheet, suggesting potential applications in tissue engineering repair.

GABABR Modulation of Electrical Synapses and Plasticity in the Thalamic Reticular Nucleus

Huaixing Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that GABA(B) receptor activation in the thalamic reticular nucleus can influence electrical synapse plasticity, obstructing LTD induction. The findings suggest that afferent GABAergic input from the basal ganglia to the midbrain thalamus can modulate thalamocortical transmission and might act as a mediator of inhibitory effects within the thalamic reticular nucleus.

Graphene-based hybrid materials as promising scaffolds for peripheral nerve regeneration

Santiago Grijalvo et al.

Summary: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a serious clinical health problem that may result from trauma or systemic diseases. Despite advances in diagnostic procedures, full recovery in patients with PNI is often inadequate. Research suggests that the use of biomaterials as scaffolds shows promise in promoting nerve tissue regeneration.

Characterizing the Effects of Synergistic Thermal and Photo-Cross-Linking during Biofabrication on the Structural and Functional Properties of Gelatin Methacryloyl (GeIMA) Hydrogels

Parth Chansoria et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of synergistic thermal and photo-cross-linking on GelMA hydrogels, finding that lower temperature or prolonged UV exposure results in smaller pore size, slower degradation, and increased stiffness. Additionally, the study shows that varying GelMA material formulation and processing conditions significantly impact the structural and functional properties of the hydrogels, highlighting the importance of understanding material-process-structure-function interactions for optimizing GelMA hydrogels for different applications.
