Impact of healthcare-associated infection on length of stay

S. Stewart et al.

Summary: Hospital-associated infections (HAIs) lead to an excess length of stay (LOS) of 7.8 days, with pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and surgical site infections having the greatest impact. Approximately 58,000 bed-days are occupied annually due to HAIs, and a 10% reduction in HAI incidence could free up 5800 bed-days for treating elective patients in Scotland. These findings highlight the importance of investing in infection prevention and control interventions to reduce the burden of HAIs locally, nationally, and internationally.
