The effect of sound environment on spatial knowledge acquisition in a virtual outpatient polyclinic

Donya Dalirnaghadeh et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the sound environment on spatial knowledge acquisition in a virtual outpatient polyclinic. The results show that a combination of visual signage and sound environment has a positive effect on spatial knowledge acquisition. Signage alone cannot aid spatial knowledge in virtual outpatient polyclinics. Data suggests that landmarks associated with sound can compensate for the lack of visual landmarks, suggesting potential applications for users with visual disabilities in designing wayfinding systems.

Development and evaluation of a VR research tool to study wayfinding behaviour in a multi-story building

Yan Feng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a Virtual Reality tool called WayR to investigate pedestrian wayfinding behavior in a multi-story building, and evaluates its validity and usability through a VR experiment consisting of four wayfinding assignments. The results show that participants' behavior in the VR environment matches findings in the literature, and that participants behave significantly differently across wayfinding assignments with increasing complexity. Subjective measures indicate a high degree of realism, immersion, usability, and low level of sickness of WayR.

A comparative study of navigation interfaces in virtual reality environments: A mixed-method approach

Yong Min Kim et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of three navigation interfaces on user performance, sense of presence, workload, usability, and motion sickness, revealing different advantages and disadvantages in each evaluation metric. It highlighted the need for more research on user safety for the walking-in-place (WIP) interface and is expected to contribute to the development of guidelines for applying navigation interfaces to specific VR environments.

Do people follow neighbors? An immersive virtual reality experimental study of social influence on individual risky decisions during evacuations

Meiqing Fu et al.

Summary: During evacuations, individuals' risk-taking decisions are influenced by neighbors' behaviors, especially when enticing individuals to take risky routes. However, individuals tend to follow others when making risky decisions, yet they do so after considering various types of environmental information comprehensively.
