Global survey of dioxin- and thyroid hormone-like activities in consumer products and toys

Peter Behnisch et al.

Summary: The study found high levels of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) in toys and consumer products, especially in black plastics containing brominated flame retardants (BFRs). The interaction of children with such contaminated plastics may contribute significantly to the daily intake of dioxin- and thyroid hormone-like compounds. Effect-based bioassays can help detect these complex mixtures of harmful substances and promote the production of safer and more sustainable plastics.

Halogenated flame retardants in Irish waste polymers: Concentrations, legislative compliance, and preliminary assessment of temporal trends

Daniel Drage et al.

Summary: Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) exceeding European Union limits were found in waste plastic articles from Ireland between 2019 and 2020. The enforcement of limits will render a percentage of waste articles unrecyclable, and reducing the limits will further increase this percentage. Additionally, the enforcement of limits will result in a decrease in the concentrations of various flame retardants in the waste. The concentrations and exceedances of limits for PBDEs, HBCDD, and TBBP-A in waste have either remained similar or declined compared to 2015-16. However, further monitoring is required to fully evaluate the impact of legislation on eliminating HFRs from the waste stream.

Human exposure to halogenated and organophosphate flame retardants through informal e-waste handling activities - A critical review

Yulong Ma et al.

Summary: Informal handling of electrical and electronic waste poses a significant risk for human exposure to halogenated and organophosphate flame retardants. Studies have shown that e-waste recyclers and residents living in recycling zones have higher internal and external exposure to these chemicals, especially younger adults and children. The dominant exposure pathways for brominated flame retardants and dechlorane plus are through food intake and dust ingestion, while inhalation is the primary pathway for organophosphate exposure in informal e-waste sites.
