Influence of Spin Coating and Dip Coating with Gelatin/ Hydroxyapatite for Bioresorbable Mg Alloy Orthopedic Implants: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Duong-Thuy Tran et al.

Summary: Degradable magnesium (Mg) alloy with suitable biomechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and osteoconductivity is a potential material for orthopedic implants. However, its high corrosion rate in the human body limits its application. In this study, a polymeric layer of gelatin/nanohydroxyapatite (Gel/nHA) was coated on a ZK60 Mg alloy using dip coating and spin coating methods to improve corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The results showed that both coating methods reduced the corrosion rate, with dip coating demonstrating better corrosion resistance.

Morphological and multifractal properties of Cr thin films deposited onto different substrates

Amir Zelati et al.

Summary: In this study, the morphological properties and micro-roughness of chromium thin films were analyzed using atomic force microscope (AFM) on different substrates of BK7, Silicon (Si), and glass, prepared by thermal evaporation technique and confirmed via EDS analysis. The analysis showed differences in the growth of chromium thin films between glass substrate and the other two substrates (BK7 and Si). Multifractality of the Cr thin films deposited on all studied substrates was observed, with glass substrates displaying the strongest multifractality indicating the distribution of space filling properties over more spatial scales compared to BK7 and Si samples.

Influence of the Biological Medium on the Properties of Magnesium Doped Hydroxyapatite Composite Coatings

Summary: This study evaluated the stability of magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite/chitosan (MHC) suspension obtained via the sol-gel approach using nondestructive ultrasound measurements. The MHC coatings obtained by spin-coating technique were characterized before and after immersion in Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) for 7 and 14 days. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the coatings allowed rapid development of a new apatite layer after immersion in DMEM, indicating their potential applications in orthopedics or dentistry.

Nanoscale 3D Spatial Analysis of Zirconia Disc Surfaces Subjected to Different Laser Treatments

Erveton Pinheiro Pinto et al.

Summary: In this study, morphological, fractal, and multifractal analysis were used to differentiate surface patterns on zirconia-based ceramics after laser treatments. Two new approaches, the Moran correlogram and the Otsu binarization algorithm, were introduced for ceramic surface analysis. The results showed that laser treatments significantly affected the surface features of the zirconia disc and reduced its isotropy. Moran's correlograms revealed a decrease in short-range correlation, while Minkowski functionals indicated a reduction in the amount of matter in the peaks. The estimated fractal dimension suggested a decrease in surface complexity, and multifractal behavior was detected in all samples, with the highest degree in the CO2 laser treated samples.

Summary: Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers doped with hydrated calcium nitrate were prepared using electrospinning. Various analysis techniques confirmed the presence of chemical hydrogen bonding between the polymer and the dopant. The addition of the salt reduced the energy of PVDF exciton and exhibited high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methylene blue under both UV and visible light.

Development of thin-film hydroxyapatite coatings with an intermediate shellac layer produced by dip-coating process on Ti6Al4V implant materials

A. Ritwik et al.

Summary: A 30-micron thick hydroxyapatite coating has been developed on Ti6Al4V substrates using a dip-coating process, with an intermediate layer of shellac to improve adhesion strength without secondary annealing. The coating showed a measured adhesion strength of 7.14 MPa and surface roughness parameters of 0.93 μm (R-a), 1.17 μm (R-q), and 6.67 μm (R-z), suggesting it as an alternative method for producing HAp coating with better adhesion strength compared to other expensive and temperature-dependent methods.

Percolative, Multifractal, and Symmetry Properties of the Surface at Nanoscale of Cu-Ni Bimetallic Thin Films Deposited by RF-PECVD

Robert S. Matos et al.

Summary: We investigated the morphological and 3D spatial properties of Cu/Ni thin films obtained by a co-deposition process. The films displayed different morphologies and rough profiles dictated by their singular directional inhomogeneities. The percolative properties of the Cu/Ni samples were similar while distinct from the Cu sample. The surface microtexture of the films showed similar spatial complexity. The sputtering process can be employed to tune the percolative properties, multifractality, and scaling symmetry of the films, inducing different vertical growth dynamics.

Impact of Gamma Irradiation on the Properties of Magnesium-Doped Hydroxyapatite in Chitosan Matrix

Daniela Predoi et al.

Summary: This study is the first to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on chitosan-coated magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite layers. Ultrasound measurements confirmed the stability of the resulting 10 MgHApCh gel suspension. XPS analysis showed that the irradiated layers contained magnesium and calcium from tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite. The amount of TCP increased with the irradiation dose, and there was a decrease in crystallinity and crystallite size. AFM and SEM imaging revealed the homogeneity of the non-irradiated and irradiated layers. ATR-FTIR analysis evaluated the effect of gamma-ray doses on the composite layers. In vitro antifungal assays demonstrated a strong antifungal effect of the irradiated 10 MgHApCh layers.

Summary: This study investigates the deposition of antibacterial coatings on titanium alloy implant surfaces using RF magnetron sputtering. The research shows that the properties of the deposited coatings are influenced by the elemental composition and structure of the RF magnetron targets, as well as the substrate temperature during deposition and post-deposition heat treatment. Sintering the targets results in structural changes, while the use of nanostructured titanium improves the scratch resistance of the coatings.
