On the path from xylem hydraulic failure to downstream cell death

Marylou Mantova et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between xylem hydraulic failure and cell death, and found that cavitation plays a critical role in triggering cellular death. The resistance to cavitation varies among species and affects the tolerance of cells to dehydration.

In vivo monitoring of drought-induced embolism in Callitris rhomboidea trees reveals wide variation in branchlet vulnerability and high resistance to tissue death

Kate M. Johnson et al.

Summary: Damage to the plant water transport system caused by xylem cavitation is a major factor leading to plant death in drought conditions. This study used optical and fluorescence sensors to monitor drought-induced xylem embolism and photosynthetic damage in a drought-resistant conifer, revealing variability in vulnerability to cavitation among branchlets. The high resistance of branchlets to tissue damage points to runaway cavitation as a likely driver of tissue death in the conifer.

Hydraulic failure and tree mortality: from correlation to causation

Marylou Mantova et al.

Summary: Xylem hydraulic failure is a major factor in drought-induced tree mortality, but the mechanistic link between hydraulic failure, living cell damage, and tree death is still unknown. This Opinion article focuses on the importance of meristematic cells in tree recovery from drought and their connection to membrane integrity.

Summary: This study provides the first evidence that Paraboea rufescens is a desiccation-tolerant plant and investigates the mechanism of its recovery from severe dehydration. The findings suggest that root pressure is an important driving force for the whole-plant recovery.

Functional xylem characteristics associated with drought-induced embolism in angiosperms

Frederic Lens et al.

Summary: Studying hydraulic failure in plants is crucial for understanding reduced productivity and mortality. There is a need to reevaluate the relationship between vessel diameter and vulnerability caused by drought-induced embolism. Nanoscale biophysical processes play a key role in determining the formation and spread of embolism.

Resurrection plants optimize photosynthesis despite very thick cell walls by means of chloroplast distribution

Miquel Nadal et al.

Summary: Resurrection plants have unique anatomical features such as thick cell walls and high chloroplast exposure, which help them tolerate stress without compromising photosynthetic capacity. The combination of these factors enables higher net CO2 assimilation per cell wall thickness in resurrection species compared to desiccation-sensitive plants. This mechanism is particularly successful in resurrection ferns, which show higher photosynthesis rates than their counterparts.

Differences in biochemical, gas exchange and hydraulic response to water stress in desiccation tolerant and sensitive fronds of the fern Anemia caffrorum

Miquel Nadal et al.

Summary: The fern Anemia caffrorum produces desiccation tolerant fronds in the dry season and desiccation sensitive fronds in the wet season. This allows for maximizing carbon gain during the rainy season and investing more in protective mechanisms during the hot dry season.

Desiccation and rehydration dynamics in the epiphytic resurrection fern Pleopeltis polypodioides

Kyra A. Prats et al.

Summary: The epiphytic resurrection-or desiccation-tolerant fern Pleopeltis polypodioides can survive extreme desiccation and recover physiological activity within hours of rehydration. The study found that xylem tracheids in the stipe embolized during dehydration but refilled after rehydration along with structural changes in the stele. Photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll fluorescence of the fern recovered quickly after rehydration, despite a broken hydraulic connection to the rhizome.
