Numerical study on the thermal performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger using twisted tubes and Al2O3 nanoparticles

Valiyollah Ghazanfari et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of twisted tubes and Al2O3 nanofluid on the thermal performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results showed that using twisted tubes instead of smooth tubes increased the heat transfer coefficient by about 20% but increased the pressure drop by about 14%. Simultaneously using 20% nanofluid and twisted tubes resulted in an 8% increase in heat transfer coefficient and a 40% reduction in pressure drop compared to the old heat exchangers with various baffles. Therefore, the use of nanofluids and twisted tubes can enhance thermal performance and reduce economic costs.

Heat transfer mechanism in ribbed twisted-oval tubes

Smith Eiamsa-ard et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fluid flow and heat transfer mechanisms in ribbed twisted-oval tubes. Simulations were conducted to find the optimal conditions for uniform heat-flux wall condition in turbulent flow. The results show that the ribbed twisted-oval tubes generate stronger swirl flow and have higher turbulent kinetic energy compared to conventional twisted-oval tubes. With increasing rib height ratios, spiral depth ratios, and number of ribs, the turbulent kinetic energy increases significantly while it decreases with larger twist pitch ratios. The optimal parameters for maximal thermal performance factor (TPF) of 1.32 were found to be a twist pitch ratio of 3.5, a spiral depth ratio of 0.1, a rib height ratio of 0.075, a number of ribs of 4, and a Reynolds number of 5000.

Swirl influence on thermo-hydraulic performances within a heat exchanger/reactor with macro deformed walls in laminar flow regime

Feriel Yahiat et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations are used to analyze thermal intensification in a high efficiency heat exchanger/reactor operating in laminar flow regime. The studied configurations combine wall macro deformations, including external sinusoidal wall deformations and an internal swirled core. The influence of the swirl pitch on thermo-hydraulic performances is investigated, and different complex intensification mechanisms are analyzed. The results show the influence of the cross-averaged vorticity flux evolution on the heat transfer and pressure drop throughout the heat exchanger/reactor.

Amin Shahsavar et al.

Summary: A 3-D numerical investigation was conducted to assess the hydrothermal behavior and entropy generation features of a non-Newtonian water-CMC/CuO nanofluid flow in a twisted tube with a square cross-section. The effect of variable twist pitch on the overall performance of the nanofluid was evaluated, and a gene expression programming approach was used to simulate the performance under different twist pitches.

Thermo-hydraulic performance evaluation of turbulent flow and heat transfer in a twisted flat tube: A CFD approach

Mohammad Javad Pour Razzaghi et al.

Summary: This work presents a numerical procedure for turbulence fluid flow and heat transfer in a twisted flat tube, investigating three different geometries for the tube's cross-section. The results show that using twisted flat tubes can significantly increase efficiency compared to smooth tubes, and alternating helical direction also has a positive effect. The study explains and compares the results using flow characteristics contours and numerical plots.

Intensified single-phase forced convective heat transfer with helical-twisted tube in coil heat exchangers

M. Farnam et al.

Summary: The study proposes a twisting structure to enhance the thermal performance of a coil heat exchanger equipped with a helical tube. Experiments and simulations show improvements in Nusselt number and friction factor, with parametrization analysis revealing that the helical-diameter has the most significant impact on the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the helical-twisted tube. Decreasing the helical-diameter and twist-pitch leads to an overall improvement in hydrothermal performance.
