Well-Being as a Protective Factor Against Cognitive Decline and Dementia: A Review of the Literature and Directions for Future Research

Emily C. Willroth et al.

Summary: The prevention of dementia is crucial due to the limited treatments available. Well-being, defined broadly as living in accordance with one's potential and experiencing life as enjoyable, has been linked to better cognitive health and lower dementia risk. However, open questions remain regarding causality, specificity of associations, and the timing of well-being's influence on cognitive health.

Sense of meaning and purpose in life and risk of incident dementia: New data and meta-analysis

Angelina R. Sutin et al.

Summary: The study found that a greater sense of meaning and purpose in life is associated with a lower risk of dementia. The researchers examined data from the UK Biobank and conducted a meta-analysis of published studies. The results showed that for every one-point higher feeling of meaning, there was a 35% decreased risk of all-cause dementia. This association was not influenced by age, sex, education, or genetic risk factors.

Changes in Personality Before and During Cognitive Impairment

Antonio Terracciano et al.

Summary: This study examined the trajectories of personality traits before and during cognitive impairment using self-reported data. The findings suggest that cognitive impairment is associated with detrimental personality changes, with an acceleration of change during the progression to dementia. The study also highlights the value of updating personality ratings during the early stages of cognitive impairment.

Change in Purpose in Life Before and After Onset of Cognitive Impairment

Angelina R. Sutin et al.

Summary: This cohort study found that purpose in life declines with the emergence of cognitive impairment. The decline in purpose before onset is too small to detect impending impairment in clinical settings. However, following impairment, purpose declines more rapidly.

Emotion Processing Dysfunction in Alzheimer's Disease: An Overview of Behavioral Findings, Systems Neural Correlates, and Underlying Neural Biology

Shefali Chaudhary et al.

Summary: This study investigated emotional processing deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Behavioral studies showed deficits in recognizing negative emotions, the enhancing effect of positive emotions on memory, and the role of cognitive deficits in emotional processing dysfunction. Imaging studies highlighted hippocampal circuit dysfunction as a marker of emotional processing deficits. The altered neurotransmitter systems in anxiety and depression in AD were also implicated. The findings suggest the importance of multimodal imaging and longitudinal studies to understand the neurobiology of emotional processing dysfunction in AD.

Prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms across dementia stages: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Dara K. Y. Leung et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and apathy symptoms in dementia patients at different stages, finding that these emotional symptoms are highly prevalent across stages and do not change as the illness progresses. Evaluation methods and cultural differences may explain some of the variance, calling for further investigation and more cross-cultural studies.

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Due to AD: Relation With Disease Stage and Cognitive Deficits

Wietse A. Wiels et al.

Summary: The study suggests that as cognitive impairment progresses, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as apathy, agitation, aggression, and activity disturbances increase, while affective symptoms like anxiety and depressive symptoms remain relatively stable.
