Soil phosphorus availability and utilization are mediated by plant facilitation via rhizosphere interactions in an intercropping system

Shuang-Guo Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of intercropping systems on soil phosphorus utilization under different environmental conditions. The results show that plant-plant facilitation is more significant under phosphorus-deficient conditions, and the dynamics of facilitation shift depend on soil acidification and microbial communities. Grass pea is more easily facilitated under low phosphorus and moist soil, while it becomes the facilitator under high phosphorus and moist soil.

Resistance vs. surrender: Different responses of functional traits of soybean and peanut to intercropping with maize

Wei -Ping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intercropping on the biomass of maize, peanut, and soybean. The results showed that intercropping with maize increased the biomass of maize, but decreased the biomass of peanut and soybean. This was mainly due to the greater leaf area, root length, and root biomass density of maize in intercropped systems. The biomass of peanut and soybean were suppressed by maize in intercropped systems. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying productivity advantages in species mixtures and have implications for sustainable agriculture management.

Summary: Agricultural land use has a significant impact on biodiversity decline globally, but adopting sustainable farming practices like intercropping can help restore or maintain biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. A systematic review and meta-analysis of data from 18 countries and 63 articles found that intercropping significantly increased the overall abundance, density, and species richness of beneficial arthropods compared to monoculture. Intercropping also reduced the abundance and density of arthropod pests, while their species richness remained unaffected. Different crop combinations and spatial arrangements of intercropping had varying effects on beneficial arthropods and pest control.

Maize and peanut intercropping improves the nitrogen accumulation and yield per plant of maize by promoting the secretion of flavonoids and abundance of Bradyrhizobium in rhizosphere

Qiqi Dong et al.

Summary: Belowground interactions mediated by root exudates play a critical role in the productivity and efficiency of intercropping systems. This study investigated the assembly of microbial communities in maize, peanuts, and shared rhizosphere soil, as well as their regulatory mechanisms on root exudates under different planting patterns. The results showed that intercropped maize had significantly increased yield, while intercropped peanuts had significantly decreased yield. Root interactions had a significant effect on the content of ammonium nitrogen and the activities of related enzymes in the rhizosphere soil. Network analysis revealed a reshaped bacterial community composition and increased relative abundance of Bradyrhizobium in the shared soil of intercropped maize and peanuts. These findings suggest that interspecific root interactions improve the soil microenvironment, regulate nitrogen absorption and utilization, and provide a theoretical basis for high yield and sustainable development in maize and peanut intercropping.
