New Insights into the Bacterial Targets of Antimicrobial Blue Light

Carolina dos Anjos et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial drug development is under scrutiny due to the worldwide antibiotic crisis. Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) has been recognized as a potential therapy for infections, but the specific targets for bacterial killing by aBL are still poorly understood and may vary depending on the bacterial species.

Antimicrobial blue light: A 'Magic Bullet' for the 21st century and beyond?

Leon G. Leanse et al.

Summary: This review provides an update on the recent studies exploring the antimicrobial effects of antimicrobial blue light (aBL) in the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. The review focuses on the efficacy of aBL against different microbes, identification of endogenous chromophores and targets of aBL, resistance development to aBL, safety of aBL against host cells, and synergism of aBL with other agents. The review also offers insights into the future of aBL.

Identification of critical control points for antibiotic resistance discharge in sewers

Johannes Alexander et al.

Summary: Disrupting the spread of clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is crucial for the success of the One Health strategy. This study focuses on monitoring wastewater feeds of selected urban drainage areas, and identifies hospitals and retirement homes as major sources of high levels of ARGs in wastewater. The monitoring approach includes qPCR-based quantifications, flow volume-based analyses, and antibiotic resistance analyses. The study suggests that local actions at critical control points can prevent contamination of larger volumes of wastewaters in a cost-effective manner, compared to central actions at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The implementation of a polluter-pays principle is recommended for this monitoring strategy.

Facultative pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in swine livestock manure and clinical wastewater: A molecular biology comparison

Norman Hembach et al.

Summary: Manure from swine livestock contains pathogenic bacteria and resistance genes against veterinary and clinically critical antibiotics, posing potential health risks. Comparative measurements of manure and hospital wastewater show the presence of facultative pathogens and critical resistance genes, indicating a risk for the dissemination of these genes.

A Comparison of Porphyrin Photosensitizers in Photodynamic Inactivation of RNA and DNA Bacteriophages

Joe Heffron et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of functionalized porphyrin compounds for photodynamic inactivation of bacteriophages as human virus surrogates. PdT4 and PdC14 metalloporphyrins were found to be more effective in virus inactivation compared to TMPyP, with a 2.5-fold increase in inactivation of resistant virus phi X174.

Inactivation Effect of Violet and Blue Light on ESKAPE Pathogens and Closely Related Non-pathogenic Bacterial Species - A Promising Tool Against Antibiotic-Sensitive and Antibiotic-Resistant Microorganisms

Katharina Hoenes et al.

Summary: The use of visible light to inactivate ESKAPE pathogens shows promise as a treatment method, with different bacterial species showing varying levels of sensitivity to the light. Overall, non-pathogenic bacteria are less susceptible to inactivation compared to their pathogenic counterparts.
