Adapting the algal microbiome for growth on domestic landfill leachate

Katarzyna Okurowska et al.

Summary: By enriching an algal-bacterial consortium from landfill leachate and subjecting it to adaptive laboratory evolution, this study successfully increased the growth rate of the dominant algal strain, Chlorella vulgaris. The reduction in nitrate production and the shift in biological utilisation of ammoniacal-N were supported by taxonomic analyses, and a high number of sequences belonging to bioremediation pathways were predicted by a PICRUSt approach. This study enhances our understanding of beneficial mechanisms in algal-bacterial associations and enables the design of optimised algal microbiomes for industrial exploitation.

Biogenic Fenton process - A possible mechanism for the mineralization of organic carbon in fresh waters

Anssi V. Vaehaetalo et al.

Summary: The study explored the mechanisms of mineralizing poorly bioavailable OC in lake waters through long-term experiments at different pH and Fe levels. Microbial and photochemical mineralization of OC were found to be higher at pH 4 compared to ambient pH 5 or elevated pH 6, with acidification stimulating microbial mineralization especially in the later stages of the experiment when OC bioavailability was poor. Additionally, the study showed that Fe could enhance the mineralization of poorly bioavailable OC through biogenic Fenton processes catalyzed by indigenous Fe in lake water.

Treatment of old landfill leachate by persulfate enhanced electro-coagulation system: Improving organic matters removal and precipitates settling performance

Yang Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, a persulfate-enhanced electro-coagulation system (PECS) was constructed to improve the removal of COD and shorten the settling time of the flocculation precipitates. By using activated persulfate oxidation process, PECS can reduce the aromaticity and complexity of organic matter, generating small molecular-weight organic matter to alleviate the pressure of subsequent treatment of the leachate. The results suggest that PECS could improve the removal of organic matter, increase the COD removal, and shorten the separation time of precipitates under similar treatment costs to conventional processes.

Degradation of natural organic matter using Ag-P25 photocatalyst under continuous and periodic irradiation of 405 and 365 nm UV-LEDs

Azar Fattahi et al.

Summary: The removal of natural organic matter (NOM) in drinking water is a crucial objective for water utilities, and photocatalysis using titanium dioxide (TiO2) has shown potential. By switching between periodic and continuous irradiation under both non-visible and visible light exposure, and employing silver (Ag) to enhance TiO2 photocatalytic efficiency, the study found that 1.29% Ag-P25 was more effective in removing NOM at a higher irradiation cycle of 365 nm. Additionally, using 1.29% Ag-P25 resulted in a lower energy requirement for removing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) compared to P25.
