Strengthening the bonding interfaces of hybrid titanium carbon laminates by bionic micro texture and carbon nanotube pinning

Shujian Li et al.

Summary: A reliable strategy is proposed to enhance the bonding ability in hybrid titanium carbon laminates (HTCLs), based on the pinning effect produced by bionic micro texture etched by laser on titanium and the introduction of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the adhesive layer. The micro texture groove width, laser scanning times, and MWCNTs content are varied in the samples, and their morphologies, wettability, and bonding properties are studied. Results show that both the micro texture and MWCNTs can improve interfacial bonding properties, with the optimal TSS and ILSS achieved at a groove width of 30 μm, 30 laser scanning times, and 0.4 wt% MWCNTs content.

Experimental and theoretical studies on laser treatment strategies for improving shear bonding strength of structural adhesive joints with cast aluminum

Hailang Wan et al.

Summary: Surface physicochemical modifications induced by laser ablation treatment significantly improved joint strength and fracture mode, with the treatment strategy of assigning laser-treated regions on two bonding edges perpendicular to the loading direction being most effective. A theoretical model based on the Goland-Reissner equation successfully predicted joint strength with an overall error less than 10%.

A simple and effective resin pre-coating treatment on grinded, acid pickled and anodised substrates for stronger adhesive bonding between Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and CFRP

Yunsen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of different surface treatments for adhesive bonding between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and titanium alloy. Acid pickling, grinding, anodising treatments, and resin pre-coating (RPC) were employed. The results showed that grinding and anodised specimens had higher bond strengths than acid pickled specimens. RPC treatment significantly increased bond strengths, especially on rough surfaces. The combination of NaOH anodising and RPC treatment yielded the highest bond strength and changed the failure mode.

Fabrication of superhydrophilic surfaces for long time preservation on 316 l stainless steel by ultraviolet laser etching

Chunyang Pan et al.

Summary: Due to its good biocompatibility, 316L stainless steel is widely used in the manufacture of medical instruments and human implants. In this study, super-hydrophilic 316L steel surfaces were achieved by selecting appropriate laser process parameters. The effects of laser process parameters on surface microstructure and wetting ability were investigated, and the relationship between them was established. Additionally, the maintenance time of super-hydrophilicity on textured surfaces was studied.

Summary: This study focuses on developing UV laser annealing technology to enhance the joining strength and electrical conductivity of silver nanowires on substrates, leading to promising graphene/silver nanowire-based strain sensors for structural health monitoring of wind turbine blades. It was found that the resistance change rate of laser-annealed silver nanowires was minimized at -2.92 +/- 1.0 % with a laser power of 0.4 W, and sensors with electrode width of 0.1 mm exhibited the highest gauge factor during bending tests.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated mechanical behaviors and failure mechanisms of different joint methods for dissimilar materials. The results indicated that the hybrid connection exhibited the best mechanical characteristics among the three types of joints, with an interactive enhancement effect between the rivet and adhesive. Filling adhesive in a preformed hole of the substrate can effectively disperse stress and reduce stress concentration.
