Effects of nano-chitosan coatings incorporating with free/nano-encapsulated essential oil of Golpar (Heracleum persicum L.) on quality characteristics and safety of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Mohammad Abdollahzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of nano-chitosan coating containing free/nano forms of Heracleum persicum L. essential oil (HPEO) on microbial, chemical and sensory properties of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at 4 degrees C during storage. The results showed that samples treated with nanochitosan/nano essential oil had better microbiological and chemical properties compared to other samples. The encapsulation of HPEO in nanoliposomes improved its antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as sensory characteristics. These findings suggest that coating with nano forms of HPEO can enhance the shelf life of rainbow trout fish.

Preparation, characterization and properties of cinnamon essential oil nano-emulsion formed by different emulsifiers

Dongyi Liang et al.

Summary: To improve the unstable properties and low bioavailability of essential oil, stable nano-emulsions were prepared using different emulsifiers with the assistance of ultrasound. The formation of nano-emulsions with different concentrations of emulsifiers, including sodium caseinate (SC), whey glycoprotein (WGP), soy protein isolate (SPI), and Tween 80, was studied. The effects of ultrasonic cell disruption apparatus and homogenizer on the particle size of nano-emulsions were also investigated. The stability of cinnamon essential oil nano-emulsion in different environments was studied, and the digestion of different nano-emulsions in vitro was simulated, including particle size, zeta potential, and polymer dispersion index (PDI).

Antibacterial Activity of Juglone Revealed in a Wound Model of Staphylococcus aureus Infection

Yangli Wan et al.

Summary: A serious problem in the field of wound healing is bacterial infection, specifically Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection. This study analyzed the potential of the naturally extracted phenolic compound, juglone, to inhibit S. aureus in wound infection. The results showed that juglone had inhibitory effects on S. aureus growth, biofilm formation, and virulence factor expression, and it also promoted wound healing in mice.

Nose-to-brain delivery of disulfiram nanoemulsion in situ gel formulation for glioblastoma targeting therapy

Ying Qu et al.

Summary: A DSF-loaded ion-sensitive nanoemulsion in situ gel (DSF-INEG) delivered intranasally with Cu showed effective inhibition of GBM cell proliferation and enhanced tumor growth suppression in rats. The DSF-INEG/Cu treatment extended median survival time of rats by 1.6 and 1.2 folds compared to control and DSF/Cu treated groups, respectively, with no significant histopathological damage to normal tissues. This suggests that DSF-INEG/Cu could be a promising intranasal nanomedicine for effective GBM treatment.

Deinococcus radiodurans Exopolysaccharide Inhibits Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Formation

Fengjia Chen et al.

Summary: Deinococcus radiodurans is a highly resistant bacterium with cellular constituents, such as DeinoPol, playing a key role in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus colonization and biofilm formation. DeinoPol interferes with S. aureus biofilm formation by disrupting production of poly-N-acetylglucosamine, suggesting its potential application in preventing/treating S. aureus biofilm-related infections or inflammatory diseases.
