Carbon footprint prediction considering the evolution of alternative fuels and cargo: A case study of Yangtze river ships

Xinping Yan et al.

Summary: The consensus to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping sector is the application of alternative low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels. However, the requirements of economic development cannot be ignored while focusing on emission reduction. To address this, a method to calculate annual carbon emissions of different alternative fuel-powered ships in various cargo growth prospects and power scenarios is proposed, revealing the relationship between alternative fuels, cargo, and carbon reduction. The study's results show that LNG hybrid, LNG, and methanol fuels are currently the suitable choices, with significant reductions in carbon emissions compared to diesel power.

Green ammonia enables sustainable energy production in small island developing states: A case study on the island of Curacao

Victor N. Sagel et al.

Summary: Small Island Developing States (SIDS) heavily rely on fossil fuels, which negatively impact their carbon footprint and resilience. This paper explores wind power and ammonia energy storage as a viable renewable energy alternative. By examining the case of Curacao, the combined wind and ammonia energy storage system proves to be cost competitive with heavy fuel oil, the main electricity source in Caribbean SIDS. Overall, in a decarbonized energy landscape, the combined wind and ammonia energy storage system can compete with fossil-based alternatives in terms of both cost and carbon emissions.

Life-Cycle Assessment and Costing of Fuels and Propulsion Systems in Future Fossil-Free Shipping

Fayas Malik Kanchiralla et al.

Summary: Future ships need to achieve low or zero greenhouse gas emissions, minimize environmental impacts, and be economically feasible. This study evaluates different decarbonization solutions involving various energy carriers and propulsion systems in terms of environmental impact and costs. The results show that these options can effectively reduce maritime GHG emissions when low-carbon-intensive electricity is used. However, there is a trade-off between carbon abatement cost and environmental impacts, such as human toxicity and freshwater ecotoxicity linked to wind infrastructure. Electro-ammonia in fuel cells and the HyMethShip concept are indicated as effective solutions. The higher abatement cost compared to current options suggests the need for incentives and policy measures to promote alternative fuel and propulsion system adoption.
