Simultaneous electrochemical determination of trace zinc(II), cadmium(II) and lead (II) in lipsticks using a novel electrode covered with bismuth/over-oxidized poly(xylenol blue) film

Reyhan Dincer et al.

Summary: This study proposes a dependable approach for the selective and sensitive identification of zinc, cadmium and lead in different sample matrices using an over-oxidized poly(xylenol blue) film glassy carbon electrode coated with bismuth (Bi/PXBov.ox/GCE). The best conditions for determining these elements were found to be a 0.1 mol L-1 acetate buffer solution as supporting electrolyte (pH 4.5), -1.5 V accumulation potential, and 180 s accumulation duration. Under these conditions, the detection limits of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) were 3.20 μg L-1, 0.21 μg L-1 and 1.98 μg L-1, respectively. Moreover, this novel, cheap and easy-to-prepare Bi/PXBov.ox/GCE was successfully used for the analysis of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in lipstick samples, with consistent results compared to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of three types of complexing agents on the extraction efficiency of zinc ions, with crown ethers, especially 18C6, showing the highest extraction efficiency. Moreover, the presence of complexing agents (excluding EDTA) reduced electroendosmosis flow. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection and quantification were 5.0 μg L-1 and 15.0 μg L-1, with an extraction recovery rate of 92.5%.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy and precision of zinc analysis among different instrument types and sample matrices. Results showed no significant differences in accuracy and precision among instrument types when using standardized methods, but serum and plasma zinc measures had higher coefficients of variation. Harmonization among laboratories is needed due to differences in calibration among instruments.

Summary: A new method was developed for simultaneous pre-concentration and determination of Ni (II) and Zn (II) in food samples using ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid micro extraction with hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and 1,10-phenanthroline as a chelating agent. The method exhibited exceptional sensitivity and linearity, with detection limits of approximately 0.029 μg/Kg and 1.5 μg/Kg for Ni (II) and Zn (II) respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to pre-concentration and determination of Ni (II) and Zn (II) in hydrogenated edible oils, fishes, and milk samples, and showed advantages compared to reported methods in literature.

Summary: In this study, a novel selective and precise optical thin film sensor incorporating synthesized HNABT ionophore into a nonporous glass material via the sol-gel process was used to evaluate Mn(II) ions in aqueous solutions. The optimal sonication time of 25 minutes was found to achieve stable thin films without fluctuations in sensitivity and response time. The sensor exhibited a detection range of 6.0 x 10-8 - 1.5 x 10-5 M, with detection and quantification limits of 1.7 x 10-8 and 5.5 x 10-8 M, respectively. The sensor also demonstrated good reproducibility and repeatability, with a rapid response time of approximately 3.0 minutes.
