Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) presence in food: Comparison among fresh, frozen and ready-to-eat vegetables

Elena Piva et al.

Summary: There is a global discussion on implementing safety limits for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food due to their association with human diseases. Processed food is at higher risk of PFAS contamination due to manipulation and packaging. This study investigated the PFAS content in fresh, frozen, and ready-to-eat vegetables, showing significant differences in average PFAS content between the three groups. Organic vegetables displayed lower PFAS levels compared to conventional counterparts, suggesting possible contamination from pesticides use.

Bioavailability, phytotoxicity and plant uptake of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): A review

Olatunbosun Adu et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), with at least one aliphatic perfluorocarbon moiety, have high water-solubility and weak adsorption onto soil particles, leading to their rapid and extensive transport in the environment. Due to their widespread presence and known toxicity, PFAS pose a serious threat to the ecosystem and public health. Investigating the interactions of plants with PFAS is crucial, as plants are essential components of the ecosystem and play a significant role in the fate and transport of PFAS and human health.

Transport and transformation of perfluoroalkyl acids, isomer profiles, novel alternatives and unknown precursors from factories to dinner plates in China: New insights into crop bioaccumulation prediction and risk assessment

Shun Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the source tracing and transport of PFASs from factories to agricultural fields in a fluorochemical industrial region of China. It also explored the bioaccumulation specificities and prediction of these chemicals in different vegetables, and conducted a comprehensive risk assessment considering precursor degradation. The results showed that PFASs in agricultural soils mainly came from fluorochemical manufacturing and metal processing, and alarming levels of PFASs were found in vegetables. PFASs with short carbon chain or carboxylic acid group exhibited higher transport potentials and bioaccumulation factors, and the number of Casparian strips and protein content in vegetables affected their bioaccumulation factors.

Phytoextraction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by weeds: Effect of PFAS physicochemical properties and plant physiological traits

Qiang He et al.

Summary: Phytoextraction is a promising technology for remediation of contaminated soil, but its potential and the influence of PFAS properties and plant traits on efficacy are still unclear. This study evaluated the potential of weeds for phytoextraction of PFAS and investigated the effects of PFAS properties and plant traits on uptake using correlation analyses and imaging techniques. The findings suggest that phytoextraction can remove PFAS from soil, with short-chain PFAS being preferentially extracted by weeds. PFAS molecular size and hydrophilicity determine plant uptake, while plant morphological traits, especially root protein and lipid content, influence accumulation and translocation. Furthermore, short-chain PFAS are transported quickly upwards in the plant, while uptake of long-chain PFOS is restricted.

Translocation, bioaccumulation, and distribution of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in plants

Bentuo Xu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the adverse effects of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) on plants and factors influencing the absorption and distribution of PFASs in plants. Bioaccumulation potential of PFASs in different plant structures is evaluated by calculating bioaccumulation factor (BAF). The results show that PFOA is the predominant compound accumulated in both soil and plant tissues, and different plant groups have varying potential BAF values.

Characterization of Plant Accumulation of Pharmaceuticals from Soils with Their Concentration in Soil Pore Water

Yuanbo Li et al.

Summary: It is challenging to predict the uptake of pharmaceuticals by plants from soils due to the high variability of sorption/desorption and transformation processes. This study found that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in soil pore water is strongly correlated with their accumulation in radish, suggesting that pore water is the dominant fraction bioavailable to plant uptake. Root concentration factors based on soil pore water concentration showed more consistent results compared to those based on soil concentration, indicating that pore water-based factors are better for describing pharmaceutical accumulation in plants. The findings emphasize the importance of evaluating and including pharmaceuticals in soil pore water in models for plant uptake prediction.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the soil-plant system: Sorption, root uptake, and translocation

Weiping Mei et al.

Summary: PFASs are widely present in the environment and the soil-plant system plays a crucial role in their bioaccumulation. Research shows that the root concentration factor of PFASs is not related to hydrophobicity, while the translocation factor is negatively correlated with PFAS hydrophobicity. Further studies on different forms of PFASs and their interactions with plants are needed for a comprehensive understanding of their environmental fate in the soil-plant system.

Comparison of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) accumulation and toxicity in mung bean

Ying Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake, translocation, and phytotoxicity of PFOS and 6:2 Cl-PFESA in mung bean plants. Results showed that 6:2 Cl-PFESA is more harmful to mung beans than PFOS, with hydroxyl radicals being the mechanism of toxicity.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in multi-media around a landfill in China: Implications for the usage of PFASs alternatives

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated various PFAS in groundwater, surface water, and sediment samples near a valley-type landfill operating for over 20 years, revealing significant differences in PFAS concentrations in different locations and media, as well as varying partitioning behaviors of PFCAs in the water-sediment system. The increasing trend of short-chain analogues and emerging alternatives in surface water, along with negligible health risks of PFOS and PFOA via the drinking groundwater exposure pathway, were observed. Further comprehensive studies on the human health risks of PFAS from landfills are deemed essential.
