How do heterogeneous R&D investments affect China's green productivity: Revisiting the Porter hypothesis

Shikuan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study empirically analyzes the effects and mechanisms of environmentally induced R&D and traditional R&D on green total-factor productivity in China. The results indicate that environmentally induced R&D investment significantly promotes the growth of green total-factor productivity, while traditional R&D investment does not have a significant effect. Environmentally induced R&D promotes the growth of green total-factor productivity through channels such as emission reduction, clean energy consumption, and green technology progress.

Carbon emission efficiency of thermal power generation in China: Empirical evidence from the micro-perspective of power plants

Tao Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbon emission efficiency (CEE) of thermal power generation in China from a micro-perspective. By analyzing data from 42 thermal power plants, the study constructs a multi-dimensional index evaluation system to evaluate CEE. The results show that the distribution of CEE is polarized into two clusters, with higher CEE in Southern China and lower CEE in Central China. The main reasons for low CEE are input redundancies and high carbon emission intensity. The study suggests adjusting resource allocation and input-output structure to improve the sustainable development of power enterprises.

The impact of drivers' short-term exposure to air pollution on traffic deaths

Daqian Shi et al.

Summary: Air pollution has a short-term impact on traffic deaths, with each 1ug/m(3) increase in PM2.5 concentration leading to a 0.64% increase in daily traffic deaths, lasting for 2 days. The impact varies among different driver groups, with males, young and elderly drivers being more vulnerable. Worse air pollution may result in more bad driving behaviors and less good manners, revealing a new factor contributing to traffic deaths.

Exploring the driving mechanism and the evolution of the low-carbon economy transition: Lessons from OECD developed countries

Bolin Yu et al.

Summary: This paper reveals the influence mechanism and convergence evolution of carbon emission intensity (CEI) across 29 OECD countries from 1992 to 2018 using an integrated decomposition and econometric framework. The results show that the reduction in CEI is primarily attributed to changes in economic development and energy intensity, while energy consumption per capita has a negligible impact. Econometric analysis indicates that energy intensity, energy mix, carbon emissions per capita, and energy use per capita have positive impacts on CEI, with GDP per capita showing an inverted U-shaped curve relationship. There is evidence of convergence in CEI across developed countries, driven by energy intensity. Among all countries, 15 European countries have made strong low-carbon transition efforts, with Denmark leading the way and South Korea making the least efforts. This study provides important implications for the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

The effects of an environmental accountability system on local environmental governance and firms' emissions

Hongwei Yu et al.

Summary: This study measures the environmental governance intensity of local governments by calculating the environment word portion in annual reports and investigates the effects of the Chinese central government's environmental accountability system (EAS) policy on firms' emissions. The results show that local governments increased their environmental efforts after the implementation of the EAS policy, and firms, especially private, non-export, labour- and capital-intensive ones, significantly reduced their sulphur dioxide emissions under the regulation intensity of local governments. The EAS policy may incentivize firms to reduce coal usage, design more products, decrease capacity investment, and even withdraw from the market, thus reducing pollutant emissions.

Does the Emission Trading Scheme achieve the dual dividend of reducing pollution and improving energy efficiency? Micro evidence from China

Zhili Du et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of China's Emission Trading Pilot Scheme (ETPS) on emission reduction and energy efficiency from a micro-enterprise perspective. The findings suggest that the policy significantly reduces pollution emissions by encouraging cleaner production. Additionally, it indirectly improves fossil energy efficiency. The study calls for policymakers and participants to optimize energy structures and adjust intermediate input to further enhance fossil energy efficiency.

Environmental regulation and ESG of SMEs in China: Porter hypothesis re-tested

Yiu Por (Vincent) Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of policy on the environmental and economic performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) using data from the Chinese National Private Firm Biannual Survey. The findings suggest that environmental regulation has a positive effect on firm environmental investment and that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors are predictive of firm profitability. Additionally, fulfilling social responsibilities and involvement in firm decision-making contribute to firm profitability but hinder environmental investment. These results provide valuable insights for regulators and investors in promoting sustainability transition in SMEs.

Has the pilot carbon trading policy improved China's green total factor energy efficiency?

Chaobo Zhou et al.

Summary: This empirical study found that the carbon trading pilot policy has a significant impact on improving green total-factor energy efficiency in China's prefecture-level cities, especially in old industrial-based cities and resource-based cities. Furthermore, increasing the technological innovation level of enterprises is an important mechanism for CTPP to improve GTFEE.

The effects of low-carbon pilot policy on technological innovation: Evidence from prefecture-level data in China

Chen Zhu et al.

Summary: Based on a balanced panel dataset of 278 Chinese cities, this study employs a spatial difference-in-differences approach to examine the impact of low-carbon pilot policy on technological innovation. The results demonstrate that implementing low-carbon pilot policy has a positive effect on technological innovation in both pilot cities and neighbouring cities. Various mechanisms and heterogeneity factors are also explored.

Adoption of green innovation technology to accelerate sustainable development among manufacturing industry

Mohsin Shahzad et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in green and innovative technologies have led to innovations in manufacturing operations for sustainable development. However, the adoption rate of these technologies in manufacturing organisations is still low. This study developed and validated a GIA model based on the UTAUT theory, finding that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, social influence, facilitating conditions, and innovation cost predict green behavioral intention. Green behavioral intention was found to have a strong impact on GIA.

Sharing economy, technological innovation and carbon emissions: Evidence from Chinese cities

Jiafeng Gu

Summary: This study examines the impact of the sharing economy on urban carbon emissions and finds that the development of personal credit information services and digital finance contribute to reducing carbon emissions. Technological innovation has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between economic development and carbon emissions. The spatial spillover effects of the sharing economy help curb carbon emissions in neighboring cities.
