Government environmental protection subsidies, environmental tax collection, and green innovation: evidence from listed enterprises in China

Zhangsheng Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of environmental protection subsidies and environmental tax collection on green innovation in Chinese manufacturing companies. The findings indicate a positive linear relationship between environmental protection subsidies and green innovation, while the relationship between environmental tax collection and green innovation shows a U-shaped pattern of inhibition followed by promotion. The study also reveals that the market-expected performance gap and market competition moderate and reinforce green innovation in enterprises.

Have carbon emission trading pilot policy improved urban innovation capacity? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China

Bingnan Guo et al.

Summary: The carbon emission trading pilot policy is an important initiative for achieving economic-environmental development synergy. This paper analyzes the impact of this policy on urban innovation capacity in China from 2006 to 2020 using a time-varying difference-in-difference model. The study finds that the implementation of the policy improves cities' innovation capacity, with stronger promotion of utility model patents and non-capital cities. Furthermore, there is a positive spillover effect, leading to improved innovation capacity in neighboring cities. This research has reference value for establishing a unified carbon emission trading market and promoting low-carbon economic development in China.

Environmental Risk and Credit Ratings, and the Moderating Effect of Market Competition

Yujin Kim et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between environmental risk and corporate bond credit ratings, and the moderating effect of market competition. The findings suggest that greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption of Korean firms have a negative impact on bond credit ratings. The study also highlights the stronger negative effect of environmental risk on credit ratings in firms with low market competition. It contributes to the understanding of the effect of environmental risk on credit ratings and emphasizes the importance of considering direct environmental performance in credit rating assessment. The study implies the need for policymakers to manage market competition in terms of environmental justice in order to maintain credit ratings.

Environmental tax reform and environmental investment: A quasi-natural experiment based on China's Environmental Protection Tax Law

Guangqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of China's environmental tax implementation on firms' environmental investments using Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019. The results show a significant increase in firms' environmental investments after the implementation of the tax. The positive effect is more significant for state-owned companies and companies subject to high media attention, but there is no obvious difference between companies in regions with different levels of economic development. Further analysis reveals that government subsidies negatively affect firms' environmental investments, but the environmental tax reduces such subsidies and thus increases firms' environmental investments. Additionally, the results show that the environmental tax promotes firms' performance through increased environmental investments.

Can environmental tax reform promote carbon abatement of resource-based cities? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China

Bingnan Guo et al.

Summary: China is entering a new period characterized by reaching peak and carbon neutralization. Environmental taxes are crucial for breaking the carbon curse of resource-based cities. This study assesses the effect of the environmental tax reform in reducing carbon emissions using China's Environmental Protection Tax Law as a quasi-natural experiment. The results provide theoretical support and policy suggestions for supporting resource-based cities in a green transformation.
