Sex-based outcomes of surgical myectomy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: An analysis from the National Readmission Database

Mohammed Osman et al.

Summary: This study examines sex differences in outcomes after surgical myectomy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Women have a higher rate of new pacemaker insertion, higher non-home discharge rate, and longer hospital stay compared to men. There are no differences in in-hospital mortality, major bleeding, acute kidney injury, or hospitalization costs between women and men. At 30 days, women have a higher rate of pacemaker insertion and readmission compared to men.

Sex-Related Differences among Adults with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy Undergoing Transcoronary Ablation of Septal Hypertrophy

Emyal Alyaydin et al.

Summary: This retrospective analysis examined the outcomes of transcoronary ablation of septal hypertrophy (TASH) in male and female patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). The study found that TASH was safe and effective in both sexes, regardless of clinical differences. Age at the time of intervention was identified as an independent predictor of long-term mortality.

Gender disparities in alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy

Dennis Lawin et al.

Summary: The impact of gender on outcomes after alcohol septal ablation (ASA) was investigated in a large retrospective analysis. The study found that female patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) were older and had more advanced disease at the time of ASA. Short-term hemodynamic response to ASA was better in women, but they were more likely to develop atrioventricular block.

Sex-related differences in left ventricular remodeling and outcome after alcohol septal ablation in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: insights from cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

You-Zhou Chen et al.

Summary: Alcohol septal ablation has been shown to reverse left ventricular remodeling in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This study found that men had greater regression of left ventricular mass after the procedure compared to women, which may explain the survival advantage seen in men.

Summary: Although women present with symptoms later in life and appear to have more advanced disease on echocardiography, the time until myectomy was similar, and clinical outcomes after myectomy are favorable for both men and women.

Summary: In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, women are diagnosed at an older age and more likely to have pathogenic genetic variants, partly influenced by genetic substrate. Women have a higher risk of developing severe heart failure symptoms and mortality.
