Zwitterion-Catalyzed Ring-Opening of Epoxides with Carboxylic Acids

Shengsheng Qiang et al.

Summary: Herein, an efficient zwitterion-catalyzed epoxide ring-opening with carboxylic acids is reported, providing a convenient method for the synthesis of 1,2-diol monoesters. The catalytic protocol shows a broad substrate scope and also allows the use of aziridine as a substitute for epoxide. The zwitterionic catalyst can be easily recycled by aqueous extraction, demonstrating the synthetic utilities of the 1,2-diol monoesters.

Catalytic Asymmetric Imine Cross-Coupling Reaction

Xiang-Lei Han et al.

Summary: This study reports an unprecedented catalytic asymmetric cross-coupling reaction that allows a variety of ketimines and aldimines to react, resulting in the direct synthesis of chiral vicinal diamines. This reaction is enabled by the development of a new chiral ammonium catalyst, which leads to highly diastereo- and enantioselective formation of diverse chiral vicinal diamines. It establishes a new approach for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral vicinal diamines.

Cross-assembly confined bifunctional catalysis via non-covalent interactions for asymmetric halogenation

Tianyu Zheng et al.

Summary: Bifunctional catalysis is important in synthesizing useful compounds. Confined bifunctional catalysts can achieve highly enantioselective reactions. This study demonstrates a proof-of-concept approach to formulating confined catalysts by linking catalytic species via non-covalent interactions. The reactions are optimized by changing the achiral catalyst.

Zwitterion-Catalyzed Isomerization of Maleic to Fumaric Acid Diesters

Ying-Pong Lam et al.

Summary: Fumaric acid diesters are essential building blocks in organic synthesis, and zwitterionic organocatalysts based on an amide anion/iminium cation charge pair have been found to effectively catalyze the isomerization of maleic acid diesters to produce fumaric acid diesters. Comparative studies on different zwitterionic organocatalysts revealed that nonclassical hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in stabilizing the Michael adduct intermediate.

Access to Bromo-γ-butenolides via Zwitterion-Catalyzed Rearrangement of Cyclopropene Carboxylic Acids

Rong-Bin Hu et al.

Summary: A catalytic synthesis of halogenated gamma-butenolides from cyclopropene carboxylic acids was developed using zwitterionic catalysts and N-haloamides as the halogen sources in this study. The catalytic protocol could also be applied to the synthesis of halogenated pyrrolones using cyclopropene amides as the starting materials.

Zwitterion-Induced Organic-Metal Hybrid Catalysis in Aerobic Oxidation

Rong-Bin Hu et al.

Summary: An alternative strategy of removing chloride anions from ruthenium trichloride using an organic zwitterionic compound has been reported in this study, and its application in the oxidation of alcohols, tetrahydroquinolines, and indolines has been successful. The performance of the zwitterion is superior to many common bases, and mechanistic studies show that it triggers the dissociation of chloride from ruthenium trichloride via nonclassical hydrogen bond interaction. Preliminary studies indicate that the zwitterion is applicable to catalytic transfer semi-hydrogenation.

Summary: An efficient algorithm for evaluating ESP was proposed, which showed comparable or better performance than some state-of-the-art codes for systems like dopamine and remdesivir. The algorithm exhibited good parallelization scaling and was able to evaluate ESP for a system with 4840 GTOs and 259,262 ESP points in 1874 seconds on ordinary hardware.
