Psychosocial features of stuttering for school-age children: A systematic review

Georgina Johnson et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified the psychosocial features of stuttering in school-age children, revealing that stuttering impacts learning, communication attitudes, anxiety, and speech satisfaction. The review found evidence suggesting that cognitive behaviour therapy and other behavioural treatments can potentially improve anxiety in school-age children who stutter. These findings provide guidance for future clinical research and highlight the importance of managing the psychosocial aspects of stuttering.

Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in Children and Adolescents Who Stutter: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Ria Bernard et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children and adolescents who stutter have elevated symptoms of anxiety or depression, and to identify potential factors that may influence the severity of these symptoms. The results showed that children and adolescents who stutter have higher levels of anxiety symptoms compared to their non-stuttering peers. However, there were not enough studies to analyze depression symptoms, and further research is needed to confirm the findings.

TELEPRACTICE IN SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER: A CONTROLLED BEFORE AND AFTER STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF MIDA-SP

Donatella Tomaiuoli et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in Italy necessitated a general reorganization of rehabilitation services, including the use of telepractice for speech therapy, such as stuttering treatment. The effectiveness of delivering the MIDA-SP stuttering program online for school-age children who stutter was evaluated in a study, showing no statistically significant differences between telepractice and in-person delivery. This suggests that telepractice delivery of MIDA-SP treatment is effective for school-age children who stutter.

Interventions for children and adolescents who stutter: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and evidence map

Amanda Brignell et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the evidence for stuttering interventions in childhood and adolescence, finding that the Lidcombe Program and Demands and Capacities Model are effective in reducing stuttering in preschool aged children. However, there is currently no high-level evidence supporting interventions with school aged children or adolescents. Various treatment delivery methods were found to be as effective as individual face-to-face intervention.
