Feasibility Study of Construction of Pumped Storage Power Station Using Abandoned Mines: A Case Study of the Shitai Mine

Xin Lyu et al.

Summary: With China's carbon neutrality target, the fossil energy industry is declining while new energy is increasing. However, China's current energy storage facilities are insufficient. The unique features of abandoned mines offer potential for large-scale pumped storage power stations, which can address economic, ecological, and social problems. A plan for constructing a pumped storage power station using the Shitai Mine in Anhui, China, was proposed to help achieve carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

The Role of Pore Pressure on the Mechanical Behavior of Coal Under Undrained Cyclic Triaxial Loading

Chunlin Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that pore water can affect the radial and volumetric strain evolution of coal, leading to dilation deformation. Additionally, due to the water propping effect, the cracks in saturated coal cannot close tightly during loading, causing sliding and generating numerous tensile cracks. Loading frequency can impact the decay of pore pressure, consequently influencing the number of cracks in coal.

Mechanical behaviour of medium-grained sandstones exposed to differential cyclic loading with distinct loading and unloading rates

Zhengyang Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of medium-grained sandstones under cyclic loading with different loading/unloading rates, using a testing method called differential cyclic loading. The experiments analyze the axial strain evolution and energy dissipation for different loading/unloading rates and maximum cyclic load level. The correlations between P-wave velocities and rock strengths are compared with existing data, and the relationships between final strength, axial strain at failure, and loading patterns are discussed. A rough assessment of the remaining fatigue life is also introduced.

Summary: The existence of excavation damaged zone (EDZ) influences the stability of underground openings. This study investigates the fracture evolution and dynamic mechanical properties of holed rock specimens with damage zones under dynamic loads. The results show that the strength decreases and the failure mode changes with increasing damage around circular holes.

Estimating strength parameters of Lower Gondwana coal measure rocks under dry and saturated conditions

Tabish Rahman et al.

Summary: This study collected coal measure rock samples from Jharia and Raniganj coalfields of the Damodar basin in India, and investigated the changes in strength parameters of the rocks under dry and water-saturated conditions. The study used regression and neural network models to predict the strength parameters based on other easily measurable parameters. The results showed that the change in strength parameters from dry to saturated conditions depended on the intrinsic properties of the rocks.

Underground space utilization of coalmines in China: A review of underground water reservoir construction

Cun Zhang et al.

Summary: The technology of underground water reservoirs (UWRs) has been proposed and implemented to address the issues of abandoned mine resources utilization and mine water resources protection in China. The main underground space for UWRs in China is the caving zone formed by longwall mining, which has a more complex stress environment and relatively poor surrounding rock stability. There are multiple key elements in the construction and operation of UWRs in this area.

Estanislao Pujades et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of groundwater exchanges in underground pumped storage hydropower using abandoned mines on efficiency and the environment, providing insights for future plant design and site selection strategies. The results highlight the importance of hydrogeological features in determining water exchanges, with worse impacts on efficiency and surface water bodies in transmissive geological media with high piezometric head elevations. The assessment contributes to the definition of screening strategies and design criteria for improving efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts of future UPSH plants.

Effect of modified draft tube with inclined conical diffuser on flow instabilities in Francis turbine

Xing Zhou et al.

Summary: When a Francis turbine operates far from the best efficiency point, a helical precessing vortex rope may form, leading to reduced efficiency, severe pressure fluctuations, and power swings. In this study, a novel method using a modified draft tube with an inclined conical diffuser was proposed to mitigate vortex ropes, resulting in improved operating flexibility of the turbine. The inclined conical diffuser effectively reduces swirling flow in the draft tube and disrupts the development of the vortex rope, thus ameliorating instability issues in Francis turbines.
