Mental health disorders and survival among older patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the USA: a population-based study

Thomas M. Kuczmarski et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pre-existing depression, anxiety, or both on survival in older patients with DLBCL. The findings showed that these mental health disorders were associated with lower 5-year overall survival and lymphoma-specific survival in patients with DLBCL. Therefore, universal and systematic mental health screening for DLBCL patients is necessary to improve their survival and quality of life.

Females Have Worse Overall and Disease-Specific Survival in Human Papillomavirus-Negative Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

William P. Hunter et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between sex and survival rates in patients with HPV-negative OPSCC. The results show that female patients have worse disease-specific survival and overall survival rates despite having lower histologic grade and earlier stage.

Depression underdiagnosis: Prevalence and associated factors. A population-based study

Alexandre Faisal-Cury et al.

Summary: Despite its high prevalence, depression is often underdiagnosed in Brazil. Sociodemographic factors such as gender, age, income, and education, as well as health-related factors like region, health perception, chronic diseases, and medical appointments, are associated with depression underdiagnosis. Improving education, income, access to healthcare, and addressing barriers for diagnosis among males, the elderly, and the population from the North region can help prevent a significant percentage of depression underdiagnosis cases.

The prognostic role of sex and hemoglobin levels in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma

Marta Tagliabue et al.

Summary: This study found that male patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma showed better overall survival and disease-free survival in early-stage tumors compared to female patients. Low hemoglobin levels were identified as an independent prognostic factor for women, especially in early-stage tumors. Sex was not a significant factor related to patients' prognosis in advanced-stage tumors (III-IV).

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Prognostic Significance of Estrogen Receptor Alpha in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Christian Doll et al.

Summary: Although ERa expression is rare in OSCC, it is associated with a dramatic decrease in overall survival in male patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and evaluate the exact mechanism underlying this observation. Therefore, ERa-positive OSCC patients might benefit from an ER-based therapeutic (adjuvant) approach in the future.

Sex disparities matter in cancer development and therapy

Sue Haupt et al.

Summary: Genetic sex plays a significant role in cancer development and treatment responses, and including genetic sex considerations in cancer treatments can lead to improved outcomes. It is important to consider sex chromosomes and gender differences in cancer risk when providing standard care for patients.
