Weakly Solvating Effect Spawning Reliable Interfacial Chemistry for Aqueous Zn/Na Hybrid Batteries

Yihan Yang et al.

Summary: By designing an aqueous electrolyte with a weakly solvating effect, a durable anion-derived solid electrolyte interface (SEI) with high ion conduction properties is constructed, which significantly restrains dendrite formation and adverse reactions on the Zn anode surface, leading to high reversibility of deposition/stripping, ultra-long lifespan over 5000 h, and exceptional cumulative capacity. The formation mechanism of SEI and the composition distribution of anion-derived inorganic-rich SEI are clarified in detail. Furthermore, the Zn//Prussian blue analogue (PBA) full battery exhibits a high voltage platform of 2.1 V and delivers 99.3% capacity retention after 5000 cycles, benefiting from the synergy of the elaborate SEI and regulated electrolyte environment.

Microscopic-Level Insights into Solvation Chemistry for Nonsolvating Diluents Enabling High-Voltage/Rate Aqueous Supercapacitors

Jinhe Yu et al.

Summary: Localized water-in-salt (LWIS) electrolytes are a promising candidate for high-voltage aqueous electrolytes with low viscosity and low salt content. The choice of an effective diluent is crucial for the properties of LWIS electrolytes. By identifying the donor number of solvents as a descriptor of solvent-salt interaction intensity, organic diluents that have minimal impact on the solvation microenvironment and intrinsic properties of the original high-salt electrolyte can be screened. This allows for the construction of a novel low-viscosity electrolyte with a low dosage of LiNO3 salt and well-preserved intrinsic Li+-NO3 (-)-H2O clusters, leading to improved performance in aqueous supercapacitors.

Aqueous Zinc Batteries with Ultra-Fast Redox Kinetics and High Iodine Utilization Enabled by Iron Single Atom Catalysts

Xueya Yang et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc iodine batteries are considered promising due to their low cost and safety. However, there are challenges such as low utilization of the host material, resulting in shuttle of soluble polyiodides, and the use of high mass polar electrocatalysts which sacrifice energy density. This study proposes a confinement-catalysis host composed of a single atom catalyst inside an ordered mesoporous carbon host, which effectively confine and catalytically convert the reactants and intermediates. The improved performance is attributed to the modulation of physicochemical confinement and the decrease of energy barrier for reversible reactions, leading to high capacity, excellent rate capability, and long cyclic stability.
