Biomonitoring Atmospheric Pollution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Mosses

Guiping Gao et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the main components of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs), are widely distributed and continue to increase in the atmosphere, and are considered carcinogenic. Mosses have been identified as sensitive indicators of atmospheric pollution and have been used to monitor PAHs. This study discusses the absorption and accumulation characteristics of PAHs in mosses, as well as the factors influencing their accumulation. Various methods, including chemical analysis, the index of atmospheric purity (IAP), ecological surveys, and the Moss-bag technique, have been used for PAHs monitoring using mosses. The use of mosses for the biomonitoring of atmospheric PAHs shows promising prospects.

Promising strategies of circular bioeconomy using heavy metal phytoremediated plants - A critical review

J. Iyyappan et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is an effective and environmentally friendly method for removing heavy metals from the environment. However, the potential contamination of phytoremediated plants and the health effects caused by heavy metals should be carefully considered. This review highlights the sources and effects of heavy metal contamination and introduces breakthroughs in phytoremediation technology. It also emphasizes the importance of reutilization of heavy metals and the production of valuable products through circular bioeconomy using phytoremediated plants, while addressing key barriers. Phytoremediation combined with circular bioeconomy can create a sustainable and eco-friendly future platform.

Investigation of the Copper Requirements of the Metallophyte Liverworts Cephaloziella nicholsonii Douin and C. massalongoi (Spruce) Mull.Frib

Christina Campbell et al.

Summary: Former mine sites can serve as habitats for rare specialised bryophyte species adapted to metal-rich conditions. This study explored the growth and reproduction of Cephaloziella nicholsonii and C. massalongoi in copper-contaminated environments. The results suggest that elevated copper is not necessary for optimal growth, and population variation in response to copper treatment may be influenced by ecotypic differences. The taxonomic classification of the Cephaloziella genus is also called for, and implications for species conservation are discussed.

The system design of the peat-based microbial fuel cell as a new renewable energy source: The potential and limitations

Ahmet Erensoy et al.

Summary: The microbial fuel cell is a renewable and clean alternative source for bioenergy applications. However, the low power output of microbial fuel cells hinders their commercialization. This study utilized organic peat material as a substrate for a double chamber microbial fuel cell, achieving a high electrical power density. The limiting factor observed was the rupture of the proton exchange membrane leading to the spread of the solution throughout the cell.

Summary: Human activity contributes to environmental pollution, especially air pollution. This study assessed air pollution in an urban area using moss species and found that the concentrations of pollutants depend on the exposure site and emission sources. Mosses remained vital in the air and acted as natural sorbents in a car workshop.

Combined use of native and transplanted moss for post-mining characterization of metal(loid) river contamination

Fabrizio Monaci et al.

Summary: In this study, native and transplanted aquatic moss specimens were used to assess metal contamination in a river affected by acidic and metalliferous drainage from mining areas. The analysis identified patterns of contamination in the watershed and highlighted attenuation of metal availability downstream. Differences in metal accumulation capacities between native and transplanted moss raise questions about element uptake and retention mechanisms.
