After the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the Spaniards not only continued their conquest campaigns in search of the gold possessed by the native population, but also began to explore the territory in order to find it in its natural state. This led to a dynamic alluvial mining that lasted until the mid-16th century in some cases.
