Are hierarchical zeolites good catalysts for Methane Dehydroaromatization? A critical analysis

Kun Liu et al.

Summary: To comply with stricter carbon emissions requirements, it is necessary to reduce the socioeconomic dependence on natural gas. However, avoiding natural gas from the future energy mix is challenging. Lignocellulosic biomass-derived biomethane provides a potential solution, and this study explores the technical feasibility and challenges of methane dehydroaromatization over hierarchical zeolite ZSM-5. The study also finds that the catalyst deactivation is influenced by inter- and intra-particle diffusion properties.

Autocatalytic induction period in zeolite-catalyzed methanol conversion

Shanfan Lin et al.

Summary: The autocatalytic induction period in zeolite-catalyzed methanol conversion, which is associated with the generation of the initial C-C bond, has been a subject of intense debate in the field of C1 chemistry. Recent studies have provided new insights into the origin of the initial C-C bond and the role of C1 species activation. Molecular routes of methanol conversion have been established, and the effects of the local microenvironments, including in situ-produced H2O and zeolite, are receiving increasing attention.

Reaction mechanism of methanol-to-hydrocarbons conversion: Fundamental and application

Runze Liu et al.

Summary: Methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) conversion is a significant heterogeneous catalysis reaction that provides a sustainable method for producing important platform chemicals such as olefins, gasoline, and aromatics. While many MTO plants are already in operation in China, the catalytic efficiency, specifically the olefins selectivity and catalyst lifetime, still need improvement. This review emphasizes recent progress in understanding the reaction mechanism of the MTH reaction, including the formation and evolution of the first C-C bond species. It also highlights the design and optimization of catalysts to enhance target product selectivity and promote catalyst lifetime, which have been lacking in recent reviews.

Hydrogen transfer reaction contributes to the dynamic evolution of zeolite-catalyzed methanol and dimethyl ether conversions: Insight into formaldehyde

Shanfan Lin et al.

Summary: Using a colorimetric analysis method, the production of formaldehyde (HCHO) in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) and dimethyl ether (DME)-to-olefins (DTO) reactions over SAPO-34 was quantitatively monitored. It was found that HCHO was present in both slight and conspicuous amounts at the initial and deactivation stages of the reactions, as well as when co-fed with water or high-pressure H2. The study also revealed the weaker hydrogen transfer ability of DME compared to methanol, leading to a more prominent olefins-based cycle and suppression of reactant-induced hydrogen transfer and deactivation in DTO.

Evaluating the Role of Descriptor- and Spectator-Type Reaction Intermediates During the Early Phases of Zeolite Catalysis

Xuan Gong et al.

Summary: The philosophy of Ikigai, which emphasizes the reason for being, can be applied to understand the role of organic reaction intermediates in zeolite catalysis. These intermediates can either control the product selectivity or promote catalyst deactivation depending on the specific microenvironment in zeolite. The understanding of reaction intermediates and their true impact during catalysis is crucial for the development of zeolite-mediated catalytic technologies.

Insight into Carbocation-Induced Noncovalent Interactions in the Methanol-to-Olefins Reaction over ZSM-5 Zeolite by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that electron-deficient cyclopentenyl cations in ZSM-5 zeolite can capture compounds produced in the MTO reaction through noncovalent interactions, including alkanes, methanol, and olefins. These carbocation-induced noncovalent interactions modulate the product selectivity of the hydrocarbon pool reaction. The research identified intermolecular spatial proximities/interactions through two-dimensional C-13-C-13 correlation solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
