Microwave-assisted pyrolysis of rape stalk to prepare biochar for heavy metal wastewater removal

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Cd(II) adsorption performance and energy storage potential of biochar produced from microwave pyrolysis of rape stalk. The adsorption experiments reveal that Cd(II) adsorption fits well with the Langmuir model, with a capacity of 53.17 mg/g. The primary adsorption mechanism for Cd(II) removal is pi-electron, accounting for 56.22% contribution. The density functional theory analysis shows that Cd(II) prefers binding with hydroxyl groups rather than carboxyl groups. Coexisting ions have minimal influence on Cd(II) adsorption. After multiple adsorption-desorption cycles, biochar still exhibits a significant Cd(II) adsorption capacity. It is also used as an anode material for energy storage in lithium-ion batteries with a specific capacity of 195 mA g-1. In addition, pyrolysis gas is recycled to produce bio-gas with high heating value. This research provides a successful example of converting rape stalk waste into high-quality biochar for Cd(II) removal/energy storage and bio-gas production.

Efficient adsorption of BPA and Pb2+by sulfhydryl-rich β-cyclodextrin polymers

Junhao Li et al.

Summary: Currently, water is increasingly being polluted by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and heavy metals (HMs). In this study, a sulfhydryl-rich beta-cyclodextrin polymer (SH-CDP) was prepared for the adsorption of Pb2+ and bisphenol A (BPA), as representatives of HMs and EDCs, respectively. The SH-CDP exhibited excellent adsorption performance with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 604.65 mg/g for Pb2+ and 287.88 mg/g for BPA. The adsorption process of Pb2+ by SH-CDP reached equilibrium within 60 s due to chelation between Pb2+ and sulfhydryl group, indicating an ultra-fast adsorption rate. The independent adsorption sites of Pb2+ and BPA by SH-CDP allowed favorable adsorption performance even in the presence of both pollutants. Additionally, SH-CDP maintained stable adsorption performance after five consecutive cycles. These results highlight the potential of SH-CDP as an effective material for treating HMs and EDCs in wastewater.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the adsorption performance of lead by thermal pre-activation and phosphate modified kaolin sorbent

Aijia Zhang et al.

Summary: Lead removal from flue gas can be effectively achieved by adding modified kaolin sorbents in the furnace. The combination of thermal pre-activation and phosphate impregnation has been proven to enhance the adsorption capacity of kaolin for PbCl2. The presence of O2 facilitates the conversion of PbCl2 to PbO, while H2O promotes the adsorption reaction and reduces the energy barrier for dechlorination. However, the competitive adsorption between SO2/NO and PbCl2, as well as the high concentration of HCl, can hinder the removal efficiency of PbCl2.
