Char structure evolution during molten salt pyrolysis of biomass: Effect of temperature

Bin Li et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of wheat straw in Li2CO3-K2CO3 binary salt enhanced charring reactions and resulted in higher biochar yield. The structure of biochar showed different trends at different pyrolysis temperatures, with the C content increasing and the H and O contents decreasing at 450-550°C, and the decrease in H content and increase in O content and decrease in C content at 600-700°C. The enhanced activation effect of the molten salt at higher temperature resulted in the formation of more porous structures and enriching the biochar with O-containing groups.

Oxidative fast pyrolysis of biomass in a quartz tube fluidized bed reactor: Effect of oxygen equivalence ratio

Bin Li et al.

Summary: The effect of oxygen equivalence ratio (ER) on oxidative fast pyrolysis of pine sawdust was studied. Oxygen mainly oxidized the biochar, providing the largest contribution to heat demand during biomass pyrolysis for autothermal operation. The biochar yield decreased from 21.03 to 9.5 wt% with an increase in ER from 0 to 11.15%. The addition of oxygen altered the formation and distribution of bio-oil, leading to the consumption of light compounds and promotion of anhydrosugar formation.

Experimental and ReaxFF molecular dynamic study of NO emission during municipal sludge/coal co-combustion

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the emission of NO during the co-combustion of municipal sludge and Meihuajing bituminous coal was investigated. The results from both experiments and ReaxFF MD simulations showed a negative synergistic effect on NO emission, while a positive synergistic effect on N2 and NO2 emissions was observed. The contribution of MHJ to the MS-NO emission during co-combustion was significant, while MS had little impact on the MHJ-NO emission. These findings were attributed to the higher oxygen consumption of MHJ, resulting in increased OH radicals and nitrogen-containing compounds formation.

Investigating the reaction mechanism of light tar for Shenfu bituminous coal pyrolysis

Zhao Lei et al.

Summary: The generation mechanism of light tar during Shenfu bituminous coal pyrolysis was investigated using a combination of TGA, Py-GC/MS, TGA-FTIR, and ReaxFF simulations. The study showed that the pyrolysis process involved activation, pyrolysis, and condensation stages, with the initiation of coal pyrolysis attributed to the cleavage of oxygen-containing groups. The reaction mechanism of light tar was identified as free radical addition reaction, primarily deriving free radicals from the cleavage of C-O chemical bonds.

The synergistic effect during co-combustion of municipal sludge and coal: Experimental and ReaxFF molecular dynamic study

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: The behaviors of municipal sludge/coal co-combustion were investigated through experiments and molecular dynamic simulations. The results showed that co-combustion had positive synergistic effects on combustion rate, O-2 consumption, and CO2 yield. The combustion of sludge was inhibited while the combustion of coal was promoted during the co-combustion process. The formation of carbonaceous gas during sludge/coal co-combustion was accelerated by the attack of •OH radicals produced by sludge on the aromatic ring structure in coal. This work provided new insights into municipal sludge/coal co-combustion.

Catalytic effect of industrial waste carbide slag on pyrolysis of low-rank coal

Yanpeng Ban et al.

Summary: The effect of carbide slag (CS) on the pyrolysis behavior and product distribution of low-rank coal was investigated. It was found that CS impregnation significantly affected the coal pyrolysis products, making the tar lighter and reducing the pitch content. In-situ Py-VUVPI-MS analysis revealed that the decrease in benzenes and phenols content was due to the secondary reaction of primary products catalyzed by calcium in CS, and the change of reaction path of oxygen-containing structure in coal caused by calcium catalysis.

Investigation of N Migration during Municipal Sludge/Coal Co-Pyrolysis via ReaxFF Molecular Dynamics

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the migration behavior and mechanism of nitrogen during the municipal sludge/coal co-pyrolysis using the ReaxFF MD method. The accuracy of this method was verified by comparing the individual pyrolysis properties of sludge and coal with experimental results. It was found that there was a negative synergistic effect on the release of nitrogen during the initial stage of co-pyrolysis, while a positive synergy related to the condensation of nitrogen-containing tar was observed during the secondary reaction stage. The study provides important insights into the behavior of nitrogen during sludge/coal co-pyrolysis.

Coal/NH3 interactions during co-pyrolysis and their effects on the char reactivity for NO-reduction: A ReaxFF MD study

Dikun Hong et al.

Summary: The interactions between NH3 and coal during co-pyrolysis were investigated using ReaxFF MD simulations. It was found that coal promotes the thermal decomposition of NH3 and NH3 influences the primary and secondary reactions in coal pyrolysis. The physicochemical properties of the char produced from coal/NH3 co-pyrolysis were also analyzed. Finally, the reactivity of the char for NO reduction was examined, showing that coal/NH3 co-pyrolysis char is more conducive to NO chemisorption and N-2 generation than coal pyrolysis char.

Effects of oxidation degree of support and phosphorus modification on the catalytic cracking of coal pyrolysis tar by char-supported nickel catalysts

Xufeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The efficient conversion of low rank coal can be achieved through the pyrolysis process. Tar utilization and associated problems like pipeline blockage can be resolved through cracking and refining of heavy components in tar. This study explores the use of char-supported nickel catalysts to improve the cracking of coal pyrolysis tar, with catalysts prepared by ion exchange method exhibiting the best performance. The addition of phosphorus as a non-metallic additive further enhances the tar cracking activity of the catalysts.
