LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Structure and properties of amorphous uranium dioxide

Simon C. Middleburgh et al.

Summary: Amorphous uranium dioxide has been modeled on the atomic scale using a combination of quantum mechanical and classical forcefield methods, revealing structures consistent with experimental patterns. Non-stoichiometry is accommodated more readily in the amorphous system, with a predicted spin-glass magnetic structure and a computed surface energy similar to grain boundary bubbles in UO2.

Diffusion in doped and undoped amorphous zirconia

Megan W. Owen et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries in ZrO2 can serve as pathways for species like oxygen and hydrogen, influencing corrosion. Impurities and alloying elements can lead to highly-doped grain boundaries with amorphous structures, which shows increased oxygen diffusivity compared to undoped crystalline systems.

Prediction of the Power Peaking Factor in a Boron-Free Small Modular Reactor Based on a Support Vector Regression Model and Control Rod Bank Positions

Priscila Palma Sanchez et al.

Summary: In order to ensure safety in a nuclear power plant, operation and protection systems must consider safety parameters, especially in a boron-free small modular reactor (SMR) where power distribution is influenced by movements of rod banks. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) model was used to estimate the power peaking factor (PPF) in an idealized boron-free SMR controlled exclusively by rod banks, showing a root-mean-squared error of about 0.1% in both training and testing sets.

The accommodation of lithium in bulk ZrO2

Gareth F. Stephens et al.

Summary: The research investigated the accommodation mechanisms for Li in ZrO2 using density functional theory, finding that the solubility of Li into ZrO2 is very low, indicating it is unlikely to be the cause for accelerated corrosion under equilibrium conditions.
