Summary: The decrease in foliar delta N-15 does not necessarily indicate a decline in N availability, as foliar [N] remains constant in the studied plant species from southern China.

Evidence, causes, and consequences of declining nitrogen availability in terrestrial ecosystems

Rachel E. Mason et al.

Summary: The productivity and life-supporting capacity of ecosystems depend on access to reactive nitrogen. However, long-term records show that nitrogen availability is declining in many regions of the world. Global changes, such as elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and rising temperatures, are affecting the balance between ecosystem nitrogen supply and demand. This decline in nitrogen availability is limiting primary productivity and reducing the quality of herbivore diets in many ecosystems. We outline the current state of knowledge about declining nitrogen availability and propose actions to address this emerging challenge.

Tree-ring δ15N of Qinghai spruce in the central Qilian Mountains of China: is pre-treatment of wood samples necessary?

Wang Ziyi et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of pre-treatment with organic solvents and hot ultrapure water on the nitrogen concentration and delta N-15 values of tree rings from Qinghai spruce. The results showed that extraction with organic solvents significantly affected the delta N-15 values, while extraction with hot ultrapure water had little effect. Therefore, unextracted wood samples can be used to study the delta N-15 values of Qinghai spruce.

Global Carbon Budget 2021

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and their redistribution among different components is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle. This study presents datasets and methodologies to quantify the major components of the global carbon budget. The results show changes in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as atmospheric CO2 concentration, ocean CO2 sink, and terrestrial CO2 sink.

Warming-induced radial growth reduction in Betula albosinensis, eastern Qilian Mountains, China

Summary: The study reveals that radial growth of Betula albosinensis in the eastern Qilian Mountains is mainly limited by winter temperature, not by moisture. Winter temperature may affect growth by increasing metabolic stress and leading to earlier bud break.

Summary: Jiao et al. conducted a comprehensive evaluation of changes in water constraint on vegetation growth in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere between 1982 and 2015. They found a significant increase in vegetation water constraint, with vegetation water deficit areas expanding and water surplus areas shrinking.

Chronically Low Nutrient Concentrations in Tree Rings Are Linked to Greater Tree Vulnerability to Drought in Nothofagus dombeyi

Summary: The study reveals that nutrient impairment can significantly contribute to forest dieback, serving as an early warning signal of impending tree death. Early detection of dieback symptoms caused by nutritional deficiency may help prevent forest mortality.

Contrasting growth responses of Qilian juniper (Sabina przewalskii) and Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) to CO2 fertilization despite common water-use efficiency increases at the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan plateau

Wenzhi Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that with the increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, the growth of relatively anisohydric Qilian juniper increased while the growth of relatively isohydric Qinghai spruce decreased. Both species showed a significant increase in intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) with similar amplitude over time, but juniper had higher iWUE than spruce throughout the period. Additionally, the anisohydric juniper became less sensitive to drought with rising CO2, while the isohydric spruce became more sensitive to drought.

Climate-induced reversal of tree growth patterns at a tropical treeline

Paulo Quadri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in tree growth and resource use on south and north-facing slopes in a high-elevation forest in central Mexico over the past 143 years using dendroecological and isotopic methods. It was found that trees on south-facing slopes grew faster until the mid-20th century, when this pattern reversed with notable growth rate declines on south-facing slopes and increases on north-facing slopes. The reversal was linked to interactions between CO2 stimulation of photosynthesis and water or nitrogen limitation, highlighting the importance of incorporating landscape processes and habitat heterogeneity in predictions of tree growth responses to global environmental change.

Role of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance on the long-term rising of intrinsic water use efficiency in dominant trees in three old-growth forests in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro

Chiara Palandrani et al.

Summary: Old-growth forests play an important role in maintaining animal and plant diversity, acting as carbon reservoirs, and studying long-term plant physiological responses, forest dynamics, and climate change impact on ecosystems. A study in the Balkans analyzed the long-term patterns of tree growth and intrinsic water use efficiency in old-growth forests, showing a continuous and significant increase in iWUE from 1800 to 2010. The results challenge the hypothesis that iWUE in forests is primarily a result of CO2-induced reduction in stomatal conductance.
