A Pragmatic Cluster-Randomized Trial of Provider Education and Community Health Worker Support for Tobacco Cessation

A. Eden Evins et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether clinician-delivered education to primary care providers (PE) regarding cessation medication, combined with community health worker (CHW) support, could increase tobacco abstinence rates among adults with serious mental illness compared to usual care. The results showed that PE+CHW group had significantly higher abstinence rates compared to usual care or PE alone. Conclusion: Combined support from PE and CHW can increase tobacco abstinence rates among adults with serious mental illness.

Smoking Cessation Medication Prescribing for Smokers With and Without Mental Illness

Sarah A. White et al.

Summary: This study examined trends in the use of smoking cessation medications among smokers with and without mental illness from 2005 to 2019. The findings showed that a large majority of smokers, regardless of mental illness status, did not receive cessation medications. The study also highlighted the challenges faced by healthcare providers in providing cessation treatment, including the perception of smoking as a coping mechanism and barriers such as lack of insurance coverage and contraindications for individuals with mental illness. System and provider-level strategies are needed to support evidence-based smoking cessation treatment for individuals with and without mental illness.

Assessing barriers to providing tobacco use disorder treatment in community mental health settings with a revised version of the Smoking Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (S-KAP) instrument

Scott D. Siegel et al.

Summary: The study found that clinicians' general ethical commitment to providing TUD services and perceptions of their skills were significantly associated with providing TUD treatment, while patient motivation, anticipated quit rates, or available resources were not significant factors. Enhancing community mental health clinician TUD treatment skills and commitment to providing such services may reduce TUD rates among people with SMI.
