Hybrid planktonic-biofilm cultivation of a Nordic mixed-species photosynthetic consortium: A pilot study on carbon capture and nutrient removal

Rebecca J. Wicker et al.

Summary: In this study, a constructed photosynthetic consortium was investigated for its carbon capture and nutrient removal capabilities. The consortium showed efficient removal of inorganic and organic carbon species, but suboptimal removal of phosphate and total nitrogen. However, nitrite and ammonia were almost completely depleted, indicating successful nitrogen removal. Real-time monitoring of the consortium's biodiversity and biofilm formation provided valuable insights into nutrient and carbon flux. This study highlights the importance of cultivating biodiverse and adaptable consortia for industrial applications and the utility of real-time monitoring for optimal performance.

Mitigating membrane fouling in a high solid food waste thermophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor by incorporating fixed bed bio-carriers

Mengmeng Jiang et al.

Summary: A hybrid anaerobic membrane bioreactor (Hy-AnMBR) was developed with the incorporation of polyurethane sponge carriers to mitigate membrane fouling. The results showed that the addition of sponge carriers reduced solid concentration and improved filtration performance. SEM analysis indicated that the cake layer fouling in Hy-AnMBR was less than the control AnMBR. CLSM analysis revealed that sponge carriers mitigated pore-blocking and reduced total membrane resistance compared to the control. Chemical cleaning was essential for pollutant removal and membrane permeability recovery.

Integrated electro-coagulation and gravity driven ceramic membrane bioreactor for roofing rainwater purification: Flux improvement and extreme operating case

Xing Du et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel water purification technology, EC-GDCMBR, for the purification of roofing rainwater. The EC-GDCMBR system showed improved effluent quality and greater flux due to the high permeability of the ceramic membrane and the large porosity of the biofilm formed during the EC process. The technology synergistically removed particulate matter, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorous, organic substances, and heavy metals through coagulation, adsorption, biodegradation, and coprecipitation. Moreover, EC was found to enhance biological purification efficiency and improve NH3-N removal.

Mycelial pellets for alleviation of membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor

Xiao Xiao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that mycelial pellets (MPs) can effectively mitigate membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), leading to improved removal of COD and ammonia nitrogen, lower resistance and thinner bio-cakes on membrane surfaces. The addition of MPs enhances biomass retention and EPS content in suspended liquid, accelerating sludge granulation and reducing adhesion force. High throughput sequencing analysis reveals shifts in microbial community composition with MPs, highlighting their role in promoting biofilm formation and mitigating membrane fouling.
