High-order fully well-balanced numerical methods for one-dimensional blood flow with discontinuous properties

Ernesto Pimentel-Garcia et al.

Summary: In this paper, the numerical study of a one-dimensional blood flow model with discontinuous mechanical and geometrical properties is carried out. The mathematical model and its nondimensional form are presented. A comprehensive investigation of all the stationary solutions is conducted, and high-order fully well-balanced numerical methods that can preserve all of them are proposed. These methods, based on the combination of the Generalized Hydrostatic Reconstruction and well-balanced reconstruction operators, can handle more than one discontinuous parameter. Several numerical tests demonstrate their well-balanced and high-order properties, as well as their convergence to the exact solutions.

An Implicit Staggered Hybrid Finite Volume/Finite Element Solver for the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

Alessia Lucca et al.

Summary: We propose a new implicit hybrid finite volume/finite element method for incompressible flows. The method splits the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations into a pressure subsystem and a transport-diffusion subsystem. The pressure subsystem is efficiently solved using classical continuous Lagrange finite elements, while finite volume methods are employed for the convective subsystem.

Summary: This paper presents a novel semi-implicit hybrid finite volume/finite element scheme for the numerical solution of the incompressible and weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations on moving unstructured meshes. The scheme employs a suitable splitting of the equations, a staggered grid arrangement, and a space-time control volume approach. Numerical results demonstrate the high accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed method.

Angle dependence in coupling conditions for shallow water equations at channel junctions

M. Briani et al.

Summary: In this paper, a modeling setting and a numerical Riemann problem solver are proposed for the junction of one-dimensional shallow-water channel networks. The junction conditions take into account the angles at which the channels intersect and include the possibility of channels with different sections. The solver is illustrated with several numerical tests that underscore the importance of angle dependence in obtaining reliable solutions.

Nonlinear lumped-parameter models for blood flow simulations in networks of vessels

Beatrice Ghitti et al.

Summary: In order to improve the computational efficiency of blood flow modeling in complex networks, this study derives a family of nonlinear lumped-parameter models from a well-established one-dimensional model. The derived models preserve important nonlinear properties of the original model and accurately predict pressure and flow waveforms in blood vessels at a lower computational cost.

Modeling blood flow in networks of viscoelastic vessels with the 1-D augmented fluid-structure interaction system

Summary: A noteworthy aspect in blood flow modeling is the inclusion of the mechanical interaction between fluid flow and the vessel wall. This study considers viscoelasticity in the entire network using the Standard Linear Solid Model and implements it through a hyperbolic mathematical model at the boundaries. The chosen numerical method is demonstrated to be accurate and reliable, and the model's sensitivity to viscoelastic parameters is highlighted through comparisons of different network models.

One-Dimensional Blood Flow with Discontinuous Properties and Transport: Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Schemes

Alessandra Spilimbergo et al.

Summary: This paper discusses a one-dimensional blood flow model with discontinuous mechanical and geometrical properties, as well as passive scalar transport. The authors complete the mathematical analysis by providing new propositions and proofs of relations. They also propose a first-order DOT Riemann solver and a simple, well-balanced, second-order numerical scheme to solve the equations under study. The accuracy and well-balanced properties of the schemes are assessed using suitable test problems with available exact solutions.
