Assessing progress towards sustainable development goals for Chinese urban land use: A new cloud model approach

Chanjuan Wei et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization in China poses challenges to urban land use sustainability. We developed an evaluation framework based on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and found that the development level of land use sustainability was higher in the east and lower in the west. The coordination level of land use sustainability declined in many Chinese cities. Anthropogenic activities and urban development mainly influenced the development level, while natural conditions constrained the coordination level.

On the role of sustainable buildings in achieving the 2030 UN sustainable development goals

Flavio Scrucca et al.

Summary: The built environment plays a crucial role in the society and contributes significantly to global energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving sustainability in the building and construction industry is essential for a sustainable carbon-neutral built environment. The paper proposes a quantitative evaluation approach based on Life Cycle Assessment to assess the role of buildings in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets. This approach can serve as a foundation for a comprehensive and scientifically-based method to assess and improve the impact of buildings on SDGs.

Summary: This paper investigates the motivation of experienced consultants to integrate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their practice of environmental assessment (EA). The findings reveal a growing inclination among consultants to align their practice with SDGs, but they also encounter challenges in implementing this motivation in practice. The study suggests paying attention to the theory of how practitioners construct practice to bridge the gap between SDG integration in theory and in practice.

The effects of a trade shock on gender-specific labor market outcomes in Brazil

Laura Connolly

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of trade with China on gender-specific local labor market outcomes in Brazil. The study finds that regions more exposed to imports from China experience larger declines in male wages and higher employment growth for women in the formal sector. Additionally, trade with China leads to a decrease in unemployment rates for both men and women, and an increase in female employment to population ratio. This suggests that trade can reduce employment barriers for women and reallocate labor to the formal sector.

Decoupling environmental impact from economic growth to achieve Sustainable Development Goals in China

Yefeng Jiang et al.

Summary: Developing countries have achieved success in sustainable development goals, but face trade-offs and coupling issues among the three pillars of sustainability. This study evaluates the progress of the pillars towards sustainable development goals in China from 2000 to 2015, finding that the degrees of coupling among the pillars remained constant while the coupling with economic growth declined. Reducing coupling can help achieve economic growth and environmental protection simultaneously.

Why win-wins are rare in complex environmental management

Margaret Hegwood et al.

Summary: This study mathematically demonstrates why complexity makes win-win solutions difficult to achieve. The research shows that increasing the number of objectives, stakeholders, or constraints decreases the availability of win-win outcomes and presents a measure of tradeoff severity that correlates with the number of objectives. A meta-analysis reveals that 77% of two-objective tradeoff surfaces are concave. The findings provide insight into practitioners' scepticism of win-win narratives and offer guidance for assessing the impact of simple tradeoff models.

Summary: This study used a correlational network approach and a global SDG database to analyze the evolution of SDG interactions. The research found that as the level of sustainable development increases, the interactions among SDGs show nonlinear changes. At low and high levels of sustainable development, SDGs are both more positively and more negatively connected, while at middle levels, they cluster into more isolated positive connection groups.
