Additive manufacturing of fiber-reinforced polymer composites: A technical review and status of design methodologies

Janet Wong et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) of fiber-reinforced composites is an important technology for producing complex and customized structures. AM processes allow for the fabrication of 3D structures with control over fiber position and orientation. However, there are design difficulties that need to be considered, such as manufacturing constraints and limitations on fiber placement and orientation. This paper provides a survey on the advances in multi-scale topology optimization, fiber orientation parameterization, micromechanics of fiber-matrix interactions, and process planning specific to the AM of complex fiber reinforced composites, summarizing recent research and outlining future directions.

Repair of Aerospace Composite Structures Using Liquid Thermoplastic Resin

Tayyab Khan et al.

Summary: Two types of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite scarf joints were created with different scarf angles and bonded with a liquid thermoplastic resin at different temperatures. The repaired laminates were compared with pristine samples in terms of residual flexural strength, repair quality, and failure modes. The results showed that the highest recovery strength was achieved at the optimal repair temperature of 210 degrees C, and the laminates with a higher scarf angle performed better. Delamination was the dominant failure mode in the repaired samples, while fiber fracture and fiber pullout were dominant in the pristine samples. The liquid thermoplastic resin exhibited higher residual strength compared to conventional epoxy adhesives.

Compression-after-impact effect on postbuckling behavior of thermoplastic composite laminated plates

Taoye Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the postbuckling behavior of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite laminated plates under uni-axial compression-after-impact and proposes a physical model that considers both internal damage and local geometric imperfection caused by impact. Experimental data is compared with finite element numerical results to validate the method. The numerical results show that initial geometric imperfection, impact point position, plate width-to-thickness ratio, and boundary conditions significantly influence the postbuckling load-deflection curves of the laminated plates under CAI.

Crack healing in infusible thermoplastic composite laminates

T. Khan et al.

Summary: Pre-cracked carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates were manufactured and repaired using the vacuum assisted resin transfer molding process. The effects of healing parameters on fracture toughness were investigated using a factorial design of experiments. The results showed that joining temperature had the most significant influence on fracture toughness, followed by contact time. Optimizing the processing parameters can enhance fracture toughness.

Characterization of delamination features of orthotropic CFRP laminates using higher harmonic generation technique: Experimental and numerical studies

Lunan Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the key delamination features of orthotropic CFRP laminates are investigated using the higher harmonic generation (HHG) method based on experimental and numerical approaches. The HHG approach can approximately locate the delamination and the MRA of higher harmonics is highly sensitive to the variation of delamination features.

Self-healing of matrix cracking and delamination damage assessment in microcapsules reinforced carbon fibre epoxy composite under flexural loading

Raj Kumar Pittala et al.

Summary: The structural integrity of micro-cracked CFRP composite structures can be re-established by incorporating a self-healing system based on microcapsules. The addition of microcapsules reduces the flexural strength of the composite, but the healing efficiency can be improved by adjusting the concentration of capsules, healing temperature, and pressure. Microstructural investigation reveals crack path deflection, crack pinning, and capsules rupture mechanisms in the fracture surface of the capsule-reinforced composite.

Yu Cang et al.

Summary: Repairing delamination damage is crucial for ensuring the structural safety of carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites. This study proposes a novel in situ delamination repair approach using controllable thermal ablation, which efficiently removes the damage without impairing fiber continuity. The whole repair process can be completed within one hour.

Self-healing performance assessment of epoxy resin and amine hardener encapsulated polymethyl methacrylate microcapsules reinforced epoxy composite

Raj Kumar Pittala et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different viscosities of epoxy resin and amine hardener on the self-healing performance of polymer composite. It was found that a 1:1 core to shell ratio is ideal for synthesizing epoxy capsules, and the toughness of the composite increased with an increase in microcapsules concentration. An optimum healing efficiency of 66% was observed with the addition of 7.5 wt% epoxy and hardener microcapsules at equal weight ratio.

Effects of matrix cracks on delamination of composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact

Tian Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the delamination mechanisms of composite laminates under low-velocity impact through thermal-depoly tests and finite element modeling. It is found that delamination positions are influenced by matrix cracks, and the crack propagation pattern eventually leads to the formation of two centrosymmetric fan-shaped delaminations in each interface.
