Accelerated carbonation of one-part sodium carbonate-activated slag cements modified by calcined dolomite

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: One-part sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)-calcined dolomite (CD)-activated slag cements were developed as a clinker-free cementitious material. The addition of CD shortened the setting times and improved the compressive strengths of the binders. CD also slowed down the carbonation kinetics and promoted the formation of calcium hemi-carboaluminate and hydrotalcite-like phases, which enhanced the carbonation resistance of the material.

Carbonation of cement paste under different pressures

Xianghai Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbonation law of cement under different air pressures by preparing calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel and cement paste samples. The results show that the porosity of the cement paste decreases and microcracks appear after carbonation. The carbonation depth increases with the increase in air pressure. The evolution model of carbonation strength of cement paste is established based on the carbonation reaction.

Production of aragonite whiskers by carbonation of fine recycled concrete wastes: An alternative pathway for efficient CO2 sequestration

Peiliang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a wet carbonation method was developed to produce aragonite whisker using fine recycled concrete waste (FRCW) for efficient CO2 capture and conversion. The operational factors, including MgCl2 concentration, temperature, CO2 concentration and duration, were investigated for the formation of aragonite. The results showed that this carbonation process can produce needle-like aragonite whisker-rich materials and capture a large amount of CO2 within a short time. The MgCl2 concentration and temperature were crucial for aragonite nucleation, while a lower CO2 concentration only slightly affected the carbonation rate without changing the carbonation products. The proposed approach offers a novel direction for CO2 sequestration.

Crystallographic characterization of naturally occurring aragonite and calcite phase: Rietveld refinement

Md. Sahadat Hossain et al.

Summary: This research characterized the crystallographic properties of aragonite and calcite in Pila globosa and egg-shells using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Various crystallographic parameters were considered, including crystallite size, lattice parameters, dislocation density, crystallinity index, microstrain, volume, relative intensity, preference growth, and specific surface area. Crystallite size was estimated using several models, and it was found that calcite had a larger size than aragonite. The percentage of calcite and aragonite in eggshell and P. globosa was assessed using the Rietveld refinement method, with results showing a higher presence of calcite in eggshell and a higher presence of aragonite in P. globosa.

Exploring reaction and carbonation products of calcium silicate cement

Melaku N. Seifu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of reaction and carbonation degrees on the reaction products of calcium silicate cement (CSC) during the hardening process in a high atmospheric CO2 concentration. The results show that stable C-S-H phase can form when the carbonation degree is less than one-third of the reaction degree. At higher carbonation degrees and depleted C-S-H, amorphous aluminosilicate and calcite become the main binding phases.

New fluorescent pH indicators for characterizing cement carbonation

Ning Du et al.

Summary: Fluorescent indicators covering a pH range of 7.0-12.5 were developed to study the carbonation of cement and corrosion of steel. These indicators showed multiple pH-induced switches of different fluorescence emissions, facilitating fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The results demonstrated the sensitivity and applicability of the newly-developed indicators for labeling both natural and accelerated carbonation of cement. The use of various characterization techniques further confirmed the reliability of these indicators, providing valuable insights into cement carbonation and steel corrosion.

Thermodynamic modelling of CaCO3 polymorphs during CO2 sequestration by cement slurry with the addition of MgCl2

Xujia You et al.

Summary: Cement production emits a significant amount of CO2, contributing to global warming. However, cement's main mineral component can solidify CO2 and convert it into stable calcium carbonate, leading to the production of low-carbon building materials. This study proposes a thermodynamic model to simulate the formation of different calcium carbonate polymorphs during the carbonation of Portland cement with the addition of common stabilizer MgCl2. The developed model accurately predicts the proportion of calcium carbonate polymorphs and suggests the optimal conditions for their formation.

Increasing flexural strength of CO2 cured cement paste by CaCO3 polymorph control

Fengshun Wu et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of Mg(OH)(2) on the in-situ formation of fibre-like aragonite and the mechanical properties of cement mortar subjected to accelerated carbonation. The addition of Mg(OH)(2) has a limited effect on the compressive strength but significantly improves the flexural strength of the carbonated samples. FTIR and XRD analysis confirm that aragonite, rather than calcite, becomes the dominant CaCO3 polymorph with more than 5% Mg(OH)(2) content. The in-situ formed fiber/needle-like aragonite increases the total porosity and refines the pore sizes of carbonated samples when Mg(OH)(2) is added.

Effect of temperature on the carbonation behavior of ?-C2S compacts

Yicheng Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbonation behavior of gamma-C2S cured at different temperatures. The results reveal that the dominant crystal forms and carbonation reactivity vary with temperature, with higher temperatures leading to enhanced reactivity and compressive strength, while lower temperatures result in more sustained development in these metrics, eventually surpassing those at higher temperatures. This can be attributed to the premature densification of the surface region and the depletion of pore moisture associated with the exothermic carbonation reaction at high temperatures.

Summary: This study investigated the application of amino acids in controlling CaCO3 crystallization in carbonation cured wollastonite composites. The use of amino acids resulted in the formation of stable ACC, vaterite, and aragonite, as well as enhanced flexural and compressive strength of the composites. These improvements were attributed to the reduced critical pore size and the formation of organic-inorganic hybrid phases in the matrix.
