Bonding mechanisms and micro-mechanical properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between biochar and paste in carbon-sink cement-based composites

Xiaohong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in biochar-augmented carbon-negative cementitious materials using various analysis techniques. The results revealed significant changes in hydration degree and porosity at the edge of biochar. The integration of biochar and cement was mainly achieved through the formation of Ca-rich hydration products. In terms of mechanical behavior, biochar exhibited viscous-elastic deformation while hardened cement displayed plastic-elastic properties. The distinct differences in deformation contributed to the higher compressive strength of biochar-cement composites.

Optimization of biochar and fly ash to improve mechanical properties and CO2 sequestration in cement mortar

Geetika Mishra et al.

Summary: The novelty of this study is to find the optimal amount of biochar and high calcium fly ash to improve mechanical performance and CO2 uptake in cement mortar. The potential of biochar-fly ash mixes was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) while considering the influence of different amounts of fly ash (FA), biochar (B), and their interactions. The experimental results indicate that the combination of biochar and high calcium fly ash enhances both the mechanical properties and CO2 sequestration in cement mortar.

Novel typology of accelerated carbonation curing: using dry and pre-soaked biochar to tune carbon capture and mechanical properties of cementitious mortar

H. W. Kua et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical strength, water sorptivity, and carbonation efficiency of ten types of mortar containing dry or pre-soaked biochar under internal and/or external carbonation conditions. The results showed that mortar containing dry carbonated biochar was the top candidate for concurrently increasing compressive strength (54.9 MPa) and carbon dioxide absorption (0.055% per unit dosage hour). Mortar containing pre-soaked biochar dosed with carbon dioxide achieved the highest carbonation efficiency (0.068% per unit dosage hour), but it reduced compressive strength (45.1 MPa). Overall, this typology provides a useful overview for utilizing biochar in concrete to tune accelerated carbonation curing based on technical constraints and intended functions.

Tiefeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores the application of biochar in the carbonation curing of cement-based materials. The results show that the addition of biochar can solve the issues of strength loss and increased permeability caused by carbonation curing, and improve the pore structure and CO2 uptake of cement mortar. Furthermore, the combination of carbonation curing and biochar can effectively reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption of concrete products.

A systematic experimental study on biochar-cementitious composites: Towards carbon sequestration

Pawel Sikora et al.

Summary: Biochar can be used as a replacement for cement in cementitious composites, reducing their carbon footprint. Low replacement rates (up to 5 wt%) have minimal impact on the performance of cementitious composites, but high replacement rates (20 wt%) affect hydration process, decrease strength, and increase water absorption coefficient.

Comparing influence of inert biochar and silica rich biochar on cement mortar - Hydration kinetics and durability under chloride and sulfate environment

Souradeep Gupta et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of biochar in cementitious materials can increase hydration rate, reduce water permeability, enhance resistance to chloride ions and sulfate attack, as well as decrease mass gain and expansion. The pore-blocking action of biochar helps mitigate microstructural damage caused by sulfate attack, leading to higher dimensional stability of the material.

Summary: Geopolymer concrete is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete, but the lack of standard mix design is a major obstacle to its use in the construction industry. This study proposes a comprehensive model for predicting the compressive strength of fly ash-based geopolymer concrete, highlighting the importance of chemical compositions on the strength. The model can estimate the compressive strength of low calcium FAGC with acceptable accuracy, saving time and money in practical applications.
