Scenario-based life cycle assessment and environmental monetary valuation of biosuccinic acid production from lignocellulosic biomass

Niravkumar Kosamia et al.

Summary: This paper compares the environmental sustainability of bio-based and fossil-based routes for succinic acid production using a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) and monetary valuation. The study finds that the feedstock production and transportation stages, as well as the pretreatment process in biorefining, are the main contributors to the environmental impact of bio-based succinic acid production. In terms of environmental cost and monetary valuation, scenario 1 has the lowest environmental cost, followed by scenario 3, the fossil-based route, and scenario 2.

A suitable site selection for sustainable bioenergy production facility by using hybrid multi-criteria decision making approach, case study: Turkey

Cem Emeksiz et al.

Summary: Biofuels are an important part of renewable energy sources, and their potential in Turkey has been underestimated. This study presents a multi-stage approach to select suitable sites for bioenergy production facilities, taking into account the potential and species of biomass. The results show that Turkey has significant biodiesel and bioethanol potentials, with sunflower and wheat being the most promising crops for production.

Scenario-based techno-economics and heat integration feasibility assessment of integrated multiproduct biorefineries with biosuccinic acid as the main product and various byproduct options

Niravkumar Mahendrasinh Kosamia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the most economically viable configuration to produce biosuccinic acid (BioSA) from cellulose hydrolysis of corn stover, along with the utilization of lignin and C-5 sugars for co-product productions such as furfural, biogas, and electricity. Three scenarios were compared using simulation software, and the results show that producing BioSA from C-6 and C-5 sugars, and utilizing lignin for electricity generation is the most economically feasible configuration. The study confirms that a detailed techno-economic evaluation and proper co-product selection can make the production of BioSA economically competitive with fossil-based succinic acid.

Arun Shaji et al.

Summary: This study presents a technoeconomic analysis and life cycle assessment of a novel biorefinery producing succinic acid from sugarcane bagasse. Results show that although the process is currently not economically feasible, expected improvements in fermentation yields will make it cost-competitive. Pretreatment and fermentation are identified as the biggest contributors to the product cost.

Sustainable bio-succinic acid production: superstructure optimization, techno-economic, and lifecycle assessment

Rofice Dickson et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the economics, environmental impact, risk assessment, and optimal processing route of bio-SA production from different feedstocks, identifying glycerol as the best feedstock and corn stover as the second best. Seaweed is found to be less suitable for large-scale bio-SA production due to high cost and difficulties in enzyme hydrolysis. Environmental results show that the pathway from glycerol is the most environmentally friendly, followed by corn stover, glucose, and seaweed.
