Recent advances of the interfacial polymerization process in gas separation membranes fabrication

Chaoqi Ge et al.

Summary: With the increasing concerns over global warming and energy issues, gas separation techniques such as carbon capture and hydrogen purification have gained significant importance. Among these techniques, membrane separation technology using interfacial polymerization (IP) process has shown great potential due to its economic, energy-saving, and environmental characteristics. This review provides an overview of the principles and applications of IP process in gas separation, particularly in CO2 capture, H2 purification, and other gas system separation. It also discusses the regulation methods and presents the potential prospects of gas separation membranes prepared by the IP process.

The historical social cost of fossil and industrial CO2 emissions

Wilfried Rickels et al.

Summary: This analysis proposes the concept of climate wealth borrowing and quantifies the country-specific present value of climate change impacts arising from energy and industrial CO2 emissions of the period of 1950-2018. It finds that the United States and China have been responsible for the largest shares of global climate wealth borrowing since 1950, while the per-capita pattern is quite different.

A critical review on deployment planning and risk analysis of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) toward carbon neutrality

Siyuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of model-based CCUS deployment pathways towards carbon neutrality, as well as the associated risks in financial, technical, environmental, health and safety aspects. The research suggests that the Golden Age of CCUS deployment is projected to be between 2040 and 2060 globally, and between 2030 and 2050 for China. The study also highlights the challenges and constraints faced by CCUS, including inadequate exploration in geologic storage capacity, high failure rate of projects, lack of financial support and market stimulus, as well as incomplete regulation framework and risk-sharing mechanism.

The current status of high temperature electrochemistry-based CO2 transport membranes and reactors for direct CO2 capture and conversion

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, the concept of direct CO2 capture and conversion has attracted significant interest due to its potential to address global warming, fossil fuel depletion, and carbon neutral ecosystem. While current CO2 capture technologies are energy intensive and costly, CO2 conversion technologies are still in their early stages with technical challenges to overcome. The emerging high-temperature electrochemical CO2 transport membranes offer a promising approach for capturing and converting CO2 in a single catalytic reactor, with potential for future development.

High-temperature CO2 perm-selectivity of yttrium-doped SDC ceramic-carbonate dual-phase membranes

Daniela Gonzalez-Varela et al.

Summary: This work presents the synthesis and evaluation of ceramic supports made of yttrium and samarium co-doped CeO2 (Y-SDC) for synthesizing ceramic-carbonate dual-phase membranes. They were found to be thermally and chemically stable at high temperatures in acid environments. The ionic conductivity of Y-SDC depends on the O-2 partial pressure and yttrium content, and improving CO2 permeation was achieved by tailoring the membrane microstructure.
