Protective Effects of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) against the Jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai Envenoming

Summary: Jellyfish stings are a common worldwide marine animal injury, with millions of cases annually, causing severe symptoms and even death. In this study, researchers found that a natural plant active ingredient called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) effectively countered the toxicity of jellyfish venom in vitro and in vivo. EGCG has no toxic side effects and is widely used as a food additive. Thus, EGCG could potentially be an effective antidote for systemic envenoming caused by jellyfish stings.
