Emerging Roles of the Human Solute Carrier 22 Family

Sook Wah Yee et al.

Summary: The SLC22 family consists of membrane proteins that play important roles in the transport of solutes. They are involved in the absorption and disposition of prescription drugs, and mutations in some members can lead to rare monogenic disorders. Genetic polymorphisms in SLC22 transporters are associated with common human diseases and drug response. Three new members have recently been identified and their physiological and pharmacological roles need further investigation.

Kidney tubule iron loading in experimental focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Rachel P. L. van Swelm et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of kidney iron loading in an experimental model of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and found that kidney iron deposition coincides with the progression of tubulointerstitial injury. Reduction of iron loading can halt the disease progression.

Spatiotemporal organisation of protein processing in the kidney

Marcello Polesel et al.

Summary: The study visualizes the plasma protein filtration, uptake, and metabolism in the kidneys of living mice in real-time. It reveals the coordinated activity of different specialized tubular segments and major compensatory adaptations in disease states. The findings provide insights into the spatiotemporal organization of renal protein metabolism and suggest that measurement of proteinuria underestimates the severity of endocytic defects in patients.

Summary: This study used a full-length, small-sample RNA-seq protocol to profile transcriptomes for all 14 renal tubule segments microdissected from mouse kidneys, identifying over 34,000 transcripts and 3709 segment-specific transcripts. Gene-expression patterns of solute carriers, transcription factors, and G protein-coupled receptors along the renal tubule were found to be important for segment-specific function.

Summary: The kidneys, responsible for maintaining body homeostasis, exhibit complexity in function and structure that require diverse cell types and precise cell markers for identification.
