Stocks and flows of sand, gravel, and crushed stone in China (1978-2018): Evidence of the peaking and structural transformation of supply and demand

Zijian Ren et al.

Summary: Aggregates, as the most extracted material resources, are facing shortages and negative impacts. Recent investigations on sand and gravel issues are often ambiguous in definition or use over-simplified accounting methodology. This study conducted a detailed literature investigation and established a systematic accounting framework to understand the social metabolism of aggregate resources in China. The results show a relative decoupling of aggregate inflows and stocks from economic growth, with a shift towards manufactured aggregates as the dominant supply. The study highlights the importance of establishing a well-functioned circular system for the sustainable development of the aggregate industry.

From resource extraction to manufacturing and construction: flows of stock-building materials in 177 countries from 1900 to 2016

Barbara Plank et al.

Summary: The global material stocks of infrastructure, buildings, machinery, and consumer products are increasing rapidly, with China leading the way in stock-building. However, international data on economy-wide material flows is limited and does not integrate material processing. Further developments are needed to improve data transparency, uncertainty assessments, and the representation of socio-economic material cycles.

Compilation of an economy-wide material flow database for 14 stock-building materials in 177 countries from 1900 to 2016

Barbara Plank et al.

Summary: International datasets on economy-wide material flows currently have limitations in terms of coverage, transparency and data quality. This study presents a novel economy-wide database that addresses these limitations by integrating material flow accounting and analysis principles. The database covers primary stock-building material flows of 177 countries from 1900 to 2016 and provides a systematic approach to differentiate between processing stages.

Global material flow analysis of glass: From raw materials to end of life

Coenraad D. Westbroek et al.

Summary: Global glass production has reached 150 million tonnes in 2014, with significant energy intensity and CO2 emissions. The lack of an accurate map of the global glass supply chain necessitates the research to identify emission mitigation options. By tracing the production chain and creating a Sankey diagram, the study provides insights for future emission mitigation potential.

Circularity for circularity's sake? Scoping review of assessment methods for environmental performance in the circular economy.

Steve Harris et al.

Summary: The concept of Circular Economy is gaining global attention, with a focus on scientific evidence-based implementation to improve environmental performance. Current research primarily focuses on the micro-level, lacking connections between micro and macro levels. Industrial symbiosis shows potential at the meso-level, but further research is needed to assess its environmental contribution.

The urbanisation-environment conflict: Insights from material stock and productivity of transport infrastructure in Hanoi, Vietnam

Alessio Miatto et al.

Summary: This study on the transport infrastructure development plan in Hanoi, Vietnam from 2010 to 2030 shows an increase in material demand and decrease in material stock productivity due to rapid urbanization. Policy recommendations to prioritize improving in-use stock productivity are suggested to ensure more efficient utilization of natural resources.

Plastic packaging flows in Europe: A hybrid input-output approach

Ciprian Cimpan et al.

Summary: The European Union has ambitious goals for sustainable use of plastics, but the lack of understanding about the complex systems behind plastic consumption poses challenges in measuring performance. A study on the material flows of plastic packaging in the EU in 2014 revealed insights into the connections between production, waste generation, and recycling rates.

The role of socio-economic material stocks for natural resource use in the United States of America from 1870 to 2100

Jan Streeck et al.

Summary: Globally, over half of extracted materials are used to build and maintain material stocks, with the United States being one of the largest consumers. Analysis of material use in the US from 1870 to 2100 shows that 40% of historical domestic material consumption was used for stock building and maintenance, with significant impact on material demand.
