Comprehensive performance evaluation of double-glazed windows containing hybrid nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material

Xinpeng Yang et al.

Summary: Using hybrid nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material (Nano-PCM) in double-glazed windows can improve thermal inertia and insulation, but excessive photothermal conversion capacity leads to local overheating in summer and affects thermal comfort. However, it also impacts natural lighting due to changes in visible light transmittance. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation of glazed windows filled with hybrid Nano-PCM is necessary. This study prepared Al2O3-CuO hybrid Nano-PCMs and evaluated their optical properties. A numerical simulation model was developed to study the optical and thermal performance of glazed units. The results showed positive effects in terms of energy and economic saving, with the best performance achieved at a CuO:Al2O3 ratio of 4:6.

Daylighting and energy performance of the combination of optical fiber based translucent concrete walls and windows

Xiaoson Su et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the annual daylighting and energy performance of optical fiber based translucent concrete (OFTC) walls combined with windows. The results show that the combination of OFTC walls and windows can achieve the least net electricity use, which is significantly lower than using only OFTC walls or conventional concrete walls with windows. Additionally, the use of high numerical aperture optical fibers in OFTC can further improve building energy efficiency, although it may increase the risk of daylight glare, especially at high window-to-wall ratios.

Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV): A mathematical approach to evaluate the electrical production of solar PV blinds

Francesco Nicoletti et al.

Summary: A simple method is proposed in this paper to evaluate the electrical power produced by Solar Photovoltaic Blinds (SPB), considering slat shading and view factors as well as the possibility of partial PV coverage. A parametric study shows that the south-east (or -west) orientation provides maximum electrical production and automating closing PV blinds in summer can significantly increase electricity production. There is an optimal slat distance/width ratio for maximizing annual electricity production and solar tracking in winter reduces electricity production. The reflectivity of the back of the slats has a minor influence on the annual production (up to 5%).
