Summary: Biopolymer-based optical waveguides with excellent mechanical properties and low light loss were prepared through bioinspired in situ mineralizing spinning using silk fibroin as the main precursor. Calcium carbonate nanocrystals were grown in the silk network during spinning, resulting in strong and tough fibers with enhanced mechanical properties. The fibers exhibited low light loss and are promising for applications in biomedical light imaging and therapy.

Summary: Soft, flexible, thin, and multimodal robotic skins are achieved by embedding lab-made optical nanofibers into elastomeric films. These skins have low flexural rigidity and large evanescent field, thanks to the subwavelength diameters of the nanofibers. Variable sensitivities and sensing ranges for both force and temperature can be achieved by tuning the light wavelength, nanofiber diameter, and skin thickness. These optical nanofiber skins have the potential to be used in various intelligent systems, including robotics, prosthetics, human-machine interface, and wearable devices.

Summary: This Letter proposes and demonstrates the fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in a flexible and stretchable coreless polymer optical fiber. The fiber is made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and periodic grating structures are formed using femtosecond laser direct writing and slit beam shaping. The fabricated FBG shows a wide strain measurement range and a blueshift response to temperature, with low sensitivity to humidity due to low water vapor permeability. With its unique sensing performances, the proposed PDMS FBG has considerable advantages over traditional silica FBG devices for strain and temperature sensing.
