Noninvasive Ventilation for Acute Respiratory Failure in Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Daniele Boghi et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) for acute respiratory failure (ARF) in pediatric patients. The results showed that NIV may reduce the intubation rate compared to standard oxygen therapy or high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in this population, but there were no significant differences in mortality and length of stays.

Weaning from noninvasive ventilatory support in infants with severe bronchiolitis: An observational study

J. Cassibba et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the weaning success, weaning procedures, and weaning duration in infants hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit over a winter season. The results showed that 27% of infants used CPAP, 49% used NIV, and 24% used HFNC. The duration of weaning was shorter for HFNC compared to CPAP and NIV.

Operational Definitions Related to Pediatric Ventilator Liberation

Samer Abu-Sultaneh et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish operational definitions for key elements related to pediatric ventilator liberation through a detailed literature review and consensus-based approaches. These definitions will reduce variability in research and quality improvement efforts, improve generalizability, and facilitate comparison.

Clinical Challenges in Pediatric Ventilation Liberation: A Meta-Narrative Review

Jefta van Dijk et al.

Summary: This study examines ventilation liberation practices in pediatric respiratory failure and suggests that a structured approach with daily assessments may reduce total ventilation time. The readiness for extubation should be evaluated through spontaneous breathing trials.
