Guided versus self-guided internet delivered cognitive behavioural therapy for diagnosed anxiety and related disorders: a preliminary meta-analysis

Lilyan T. Oey et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis of 11 studies found that guided and self-guided internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT) showed similar efficacy in the treatment of anxiety and related disorders (ARDs). Guided ICBT had slightly better outcomes at post-treatment, but there were no significant differences at follow-up. Gender distribution, type of support, and amount of guidance in guided-treatment moderated treatment outcomes.

Summary: This study compared the demographic and clinical characteristics of individuals who enrolled in self-guided ICBT for OCD to those who completed face-to-face treatment. The results showed that participants in the ICBT group were younger, more likely to be female, and less likely to take medication. There were no significant differences between the groups on OCD symptom severity or depressive symptom severity.

Summary: This study compared therapist-guided and unguided internet-based CBT with face-to-face CBT for adults with OCD. The findings suggest that therapist-guided internet-based CBT could be a cost-effective alternative to face-to-face CBT, while unguided internet-based CBT may be less effective.

The immediate and long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A one-year follow-up study

Jinmin Liao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the negative impact of COVID-19 on OCD patients persisted one year later, with female gender, concern about COVID-19, and baseline symptom severity being risk factors for exacerbation of symptoms. Optimism and resilience were found to be protective factors against symptom exacerbation both during the early stages of COVID-19 and at the one-year follow-up.

Effect of an Internet-Delivered Stepped-Care Program vs In-Person Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms in Children and Adolescents: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Kristina Aspvall et al.

Summary: The study showed that the internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program followed by traditional in-person CBT if necessary was noninferior to in-person CBT alone for treating children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder. There was no significant difference in symptoms between the two groups at the 6-month follow-up. Despite varying treatment responses, overall, the noninferiority of internet-delivered CBT was confirmed.
